"MAYDAY! MAYDAY!", "Mayday!? What the heck is that!?", "Why, it`s the Russian New Year. We can have a parade and serve hot Hors D`Oeuvres….!"
A Classic "Airplane" Quote and unfortunately the first thing I think of when I hear someone mention the May Bank Holiday! Yeah, I know that`s worrying but I`ll still keep taking the tablets! Fortunately I`m down to only hearing the 3 voices in my head now and…eh? What!?....no!! I`m busy working, shhhh!!!
Eh, sorry, where was I!? Ah yes, the May Bank Holiday Weekend! Hot on the heels of Easter you guys are treated to another long weekend. I have to say that I`m very much looking forward to this Sunday as it`s International Jedi Day! And for all you golfers playing this Sunday who swipe their driver about like Yoda`s Lightsaber all I can say is "May the 4th be with you!"
In many ways this week I did feel like the great Jedi Master, or perhaps at least his young apprentice Obi Wan Kenobi! As I saw my very own Padawan learner, Ibrahim Hussain have one of those weeks you hope all your students have.
Ibby started the weekend on Friday afternoon by Holing-In-One on the Par 3 11th on his way to comfortably winning his Fleming Watson Team match 7&6. At that point he was 3 Under Par for the round. The following day in the Spring Meeting, although not able to replicate that incredible scoring from the harder White Medal Tees, Ibby still managed to post an excellent 76(8) - 68 to get his handicap down 1 stroke.
Ibrahim as you may know is my Junior Scholar for 2014 and we started our coaching program only a few weeks ago. One session to focus on his Full swing and iron play, followed quickly by a second session on his putting and already Ibrahim has achieved a memorable feat and more importantly a worthwhile reduction on his handicap.
As I scrolled through the results from Saturdays competition it was really pleasing to see so many of my pupils doing so well. 6 out of the Top 7 in Div 1 in fact. With notable mention to both Stephen Cunningham, who following a new TaylorMade SLDR Driver fitting and some swing advice managed to shave 12 strokes off of his score from the previous week! And also to Austen McDowall who has made a very consistent start to the season but finally got some reward after a joint best gross score of the day 72 which has brought his handicap down to 2! Austen had recently been fitted for both a new PING i25 Driver and new Titleist Vokey Wedge system.
DIV 1 however wasn't won by any of the above mentioned! That accolade went to my Generation Day partner David Auld 75(8) - 67 with Ibrahim in second spot and Jim Aird 74(6) - 68 in 3rd. As Ibby and 4th placed Callum Taggart are both Juniors that meant Jim took 2nd Sweep and Stephen Cunningham collect 3rd Sweep so that driver has started paying for itself!
DIV 2 saw the good scoring by pupils continuing with Allan Smith 83(16) - 67 leading the way, although having just become a new father again I`m sure it`s the sleep depravation that stopped him worrying about his game as opposed to anything I`ve done that contributed to his score!! Something else that will put a smile on Allan`s face is that his score was also the best of the Lombard Trophy Qualifiers so he will join me at Ladybank GC on Tuesday 10th June for a crack at trying to reach the Grand Final which will be held at Gleneagles 2 weeks before this years Ryder Cup….maybe a bit to late for a last minute Wildcard but you never know! Brian Donnan 85(16) - 69 was 2nd and Rab Cochrane 87(26) - 71 was 3rd.
DIV 3 brought another big smile to my face when I saw Keith Robb 86(19) - 67 reduce his handicap and get some instant reward following the 2nd of our shortgame lessons we had just last Thursday! And with Philip Sherwood 86(18) - 68 in 2nd place only 1 week after his lesson with me it was a great day all round for many of the guys who have invested allowing me to help improve their game and enjoyment! Stuart Boyd 87(18) - 69 took 3rd spot in his Division and picked up some good Cappro Cup points!
After Week 2 of Qualifying things are starting to get going with now many different people having picked up points.
There are still 7 more Qualifying events to go so don`t worry if you haven't played in any there is still plenty time to do that and start accumulating points.
CAPPRO CUP STANDINGS
Thursday Medal was also played this week with 2 Divisions up for grabs now the entry is getting bigger. DIV 1 saw Robbie Sutherland 74(6) - 68 finish first with Austen McDowall 71(3) - 68 as previously mentioned start his descent decent to his new handicap. Robin McGuire 81(12) - 69 finished 3rd.
DIV 2 was won by Craig Walker 85(15) - 70 with Tom Stein 91(19) - 72 edging out Paul Seeger 90(18) - 72 on a countback for 2nd & 3rd.
So whilst the men have been showing of their talents on the fairways the Ladies of Eastwood were showing off their talents on the Catwalk! The now annual festival of fashion was unveiled once more last Wednesday. The night was the usual fun and fashion, giggles and wiggles and a big thank you to everyone who made the night another success.
A big thank you has to go to the Companies and their representatives who took the time out of their evening to come along and support the show. We had stuart with his Galvin Green Range, Joe from Glenmuir, Gregor showcasing adidas, Elaine with her Green Lamb collection and Hazel with her own brand, Rheign.
These clothes were given their moment in the spotlight thanks to our wonderful models for the night, Hilary Williamson, Jean Tait, Margaret McLay, Veronique Ford, Anna Hunter and Laura Paterson. In between each of the Brands we had some interesting interludes! The first section saw the Ladies "Putt For Prizes" with the chance to win an outfit of their choice. Which went all the way to the last 3 girls in the room on a sudden death putt out for the prize. The irony is that Anna(one of my models)won the prize but it was Lady captain Christine McConnell who had to put for her as she was getting changed for the next outfit!!!
The next interval was the usual Raffle(no skill required…..thankfully!!" before the two "Newbies" in the Pro Shop got their baptism of fire when I made Steven & Stuart walk the line in some of the new gents fashions!
That was all before we got a surprise visit from our special guest, a slightly inebriated John Daly!
You might say it was a Jolly Good Show, and another Jolly shouting "Good Show!" will be our very own Frank Jolly who scooped this weeks Bonus ball Draw with "unlucky for everyone else" Number 12!
Perhaps Frank will put his winnings to good use on some of my great in Store promotions!?
