Greetings from Stuart Wilson
Eastwood Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

"Eeeee G-G-G-Grandville, Ah-Ah-Ah were just Su-Su-Su-sayin to N-N-N-nurse Gladys that golf wur just a L-L-L-load of balls! Just a bunch o`P-P-P-P..(Players!?) No, P-P-Panzies who are Pro-Pro-Pro (Professionals!?)……No, Procrastinating over what C-C-C (Club they`re going to use!?)…No, C-Colour of P-Pullover they should be wearing just so they can chase a little white B-B-B-Ball around for F-F-F-F (Fun!?)….No, F-F-F-Five hours!!! Apparently they are all appearing in P-P-P (Pantomime!?) ….No, P-P-Pinehurst this week! Sky Sports are going to be showing it for Th-Th-Th (Thanksgiving!?)…N-, Th-Th-Thirty Hours!"

Yes, this weekend it`s going to be "US Open All Hours!"

Thought by many to be Golf`s hardest Major to win! Certainly the USGA make the US Open venues the toughest golf courses but whether that necessarily culminates in the best player winning is another debate.

Certainly no one can deny that last year's winner, Justin Rose, fully deserved his victory. But who will get their hands on the trophy this year!? I honestly think that the quality of player in the modern day Major field is so strong that it is literally anyone`s for the taking! Is recent form any sort of barometer given that the style of course that regular tour events are played on are so different to the exam that Pinehurst will present the players with this week.

That said I wouldn`t be too surprised to see Matt Kuchar a million miles away come Sunday night.

It`ll be then when we will also find out who picked well in my US Open Sweepstake! Those who bought a ticket had 3 times the chance to win as they had picked a 1st round Tee Time so they have 3 players to root for this time.

It`ll be rooting galore these next few weeks as it`s just a sporting bonanza about to "kick off"! As well as the golf, this weekend also sees the start of the much anticipated Fifa World Cup in Brazil. Racism, corruption, exploitation and deceit! Fifa will feel right at home in Brazil!!

Will the Samba stars triumph on home turf? Or will a European side change the history books with a victory on South American soil!? How long into the tournament will it be before a commentator mentions 1966!? That glory was so long ago that even Ross Barclays Grandfather hadn`t been born yet! Will Costa Rica do to England what they did to Scotland in 1990!? Time will tell and I for one can`t wait to watch it all unfold!

And if that weren`t enough excitement then whilst Brazil has it`s marijuana it`s Britain that can boast about it`s grass! (So put that in your pipe and smoke it!!) Yes, Wimbledon is here and we are all hoping that again Murray can make a Mountain out of a Henman Hill. Has he got what it takes to go all the way at SW12 again this year!? As usual the likes of the hard hitting Nadal, the mighty Djokovic and the silky Federer stand in his way so I guess he`ll have to take the Rafa with the smooth if he`s to prevail this time! And if the quality of his opposition wasn`t enough for him to overcome then there is also the Great British Summer to contend with! No doubt there will be much intervention from good old Rodney Raincloud!

He certainly had plenty to say over the last few competition days here at Eastwood! Last Thursday's Medal was rain interrupted which saw the field reduced in number. Gary potts 81(11) - 70 clearly handled the conditions better than the rest with the low score for the day. He pipped Colin McMurtrie 81(10) - 71 to top spot in Division 1 with Paul Houston 85(13) - 72 a stroke further behind.

In Division 2 the top 3 scores were only separated by the countback and it was John Masson 87(16) - 71 that was the best of that bunch with Tom Collins 95(24) - 71 good enough for 2nd which meant Ron Burkey came in 3rd.

Saturday saw the June Medal and last Qualifying Round for the Club Championship take place. A promising start to the day turned bleak later on with some torrential downpours but thanks to a very low entry in the competition and not many afternoon players at all the Medal was able to be completed. Neil Carruthers 76(9) - 67 was the low score of the day and also took the top Division. Anthony Glancey 77(8) - 69 was 2nd and Gavin Campbell 77(7) - 70 continued his steady run of form.

Steven Murray 83(14) - 69 won Division 2 on the countback from Adam McDowell 81(12) - 69 with Iain Wilkie 83(12) - 71 2 strokes further back in 3rd. David Flower 93(24) - 69 proved that he blooms best in the rain whilst Fraser McKinlay 89(18) - 71 showed it`s also best to get out early before the rain wakes up! Barrie Smith 91(20) - 71 was squeezed into 3rd on the countback.

There were important Cappro Cup points up for grabs at the weekend and the battle for the Top 4 spots in each Category are really hoting up now that we are past the half way stage! Here are how the latest standings are looking.

Another winner from the weekend was Austen McDowall who scoop the Bonus Ball Draw.

Probably the most pleasing win from last week was seeing the Junior Team edge ever closer to the Fleming Watson League Title after whitewashing are neighbours East Renfrewshire 6-0 (8-0 if you include the 2 Reserve Matches!!) made all the more sweeter as it was on their own patch! With 2 games to go the boys know that barring some freak results 1 more win should be enough!

The gents Brand Putter pulled off a good 5-3 home win over Whitecraigs who had been neck and neck with Haggs Castle at the top of the table up to that point!

Use the 'tee drill' to groove a powerful strike

Last week we looked at how brands are creating irons that offer more distance than ever before. With a 9-iron in your hands, as opposed to a 7-iron, we're talking more looks at birdies - so long as your ball-striking is sound. So, here's a drill to help you deliver cleaner, more powerful strikes...
