It`s been said many times by some of the World`s top golf coaches that the biggest problem Tiger Woods suffered from was that his head dropped too much whilst driving! But not one of them mentioned it hitting the steering wheel!!

Pros news

'The wonderful thing about Tigger. Is he used to be a wonderful thing! At the top there was nobody better, but at rock bottom he`s become a sad thing! The worrying thing about Tigger, he decided to take a wee nap! He was loaded with vim and vigor, and found driving with his head in his lap! He was grumpy, slumpy, mumpy, jumpy. And definitely not fun, fun, fun! But the most wonderful thing about Tigger is, thankfully right now he`s the only one!'

Yes, the sad news that Tiger Woods was arrested on Monday. When the Police informed him that he had gone off course in a state of DUI his initial response was 'Surely I get a Free drop from that!?'

Tiger is putting his misdemeanour down to the 'prescription medication' he is on as he recovers from his latest back surgery, but he does live in California where medicinal marijuana has been legalized for some time!!! And was it just me or was Tiger doing a pretty good David Guest Impersonation in his Police Photo!?

There was another African-American spotted unusually 'out there' whilst driving waywardly last week too. Fortunately this time it was only former President Barack Obama on an unexpected visit to Scotland, and more significantly, St Andrews where he took in a game of 'gauf' at the Hame of Gowf! I guess that it shouldn`t have come as too much of a surprise that the former Democratic Leader was a 'Lefty'! Unfortunately for him he succumbed to the Valley Of Sin when he inexplicably put 2 balls up Granny Clarks Wynd!

There was another momentous history making landmark occasion occurring over the other side of the country at Hampden where Celtic went the entire domestic Season...without releasing another Strip! Oh, they also pipped Aberdeen in the dying seconds of injury time to win the Scottish Cup. It wasn`t all bad for Aberdeen because the 24,000 travelling supporters who made the journey down to Glasgow meant those who stayed in the Granite City could actually get a parking space in Union Square on a Saturday!

Tour news

There were plenty parked Cars on show at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last weekend too. But it was something of Swedish design and build that showed the greatest acceleration of anything on the final day. Alex Noren posted a flawless, 10 under par, 62 which included an eagle 3 at the 18th hole to post an 11 under par total.

Now the leaders had been overtaken and were now the chasing pack. One by one the wheels fell off, with a few of the players looking as if they`d taken driving tips from Tiger (yip, both kinds!) That win for Noren is his 5th European Tour victory in the last 11 months. I wonder if his next one might be a Major!?

Another player that I don`t think will be too far away from landing one of golf`s grand slams is Super Spaniard, Jon Rahm. Although he didn`t win the Dean & Deluca Invitational, another impressive performance saw him Tied 2nd place 1 shot back from eventual winner Kevin Kisner. With the US Open just around the corner, a tournament where Rahm won Low Amateur last year, and his rise through the professional rankings which has seen him climb to 9th in the World and 4th in the FedEx Cup, you have to think the Barrika Bomber (when you realise where he`s from you`ll like what I did there!) is one of the hot favourites for the 2nd major of the year!

On that note it`s a good time to let you know that I will be launching my US Open Sweepstake this Saturday.

This will be along the same format as the US Masters Sweepstake from earlier in the year.

£5 Per Square - Pick A Number

Your Number will relate to a player in the 1st Round Draw.

There will be pay-outs for the following:
1st: £100
2nd: £80
3rd: £60
4th: £40
5th: £20

Best & Worst Score Each Day: £15
Top Amateur: £20

Let`s hope it`s going to be another epic one!

Product spotlight

It certainly was another EPIC week for Callaway. It looks like they have grabbed the baton from TaylorMade`s earlier season dominance in the winners enclosure.

On both sides of the pond it was Callaway Staff Players who got their hands on the title which I`m sure was music to Callaway`s ears in the week they launch the new EPIC Irons & Hybrids to complete the EPIC Family. The Drivers especially have caught the imagination thanks to their incredible distance performance and jailbreak enhanced forgiveness.

It's fair to say our Callaway Fitting Day was EPIC! Thanks to everyone who came along, and I think everyone who did was impressed by their gains, with most experiencing in the region of 15-20 yards of consistent Carry Distance improvement, whilst also gaining a better/tighter dispersion.

They also got a first peak at the new EPIC Irons and Hybrids (pictured below) which by all accounts give as equally as impressive performance as the Drivers and Woods. But like their big brothers they aren't cheap! A set of 7 Irons Steel will set you back a cool £1499

Now, unfortunately I have to invest in the Fitting Components if I wish to Custom Fit these Clubs, and I don't see myself selling enough of these sets at that price to justify that. So in order to still provide my Customers with the very best of service I have come up with the following proposition for these Irons which I'm calling my - EPIC Experience.

Anyone looking to purchase the EPIC Irons would be taken by myself to a Fitting Appointment at the Callaway Fitting Centre in St Andrews after which we would play a round of Golf somewhere on the way back followed by a meal, all expenses paid.

Competition news

The Mid-week competition was for the Christie Cup, a Stableford. I`m sure there will be a few players who broke the 40 point threshold very disappointed that the closest anyone got to the eventual winner was 3 points because Roddy Cameron`s FORTY-SIX point haul was incredibly impressive when you consider it also included a Double Bogey 6 at the 16th! As you can see he was delighted about the result!!

Wed
Division 1
1 Derek Harrold 43 Points
2 Paul Morrison 41 Points
3 Kevin Daglish 39 Points

Division 2

The scoring was good again on Saturday but nothing reached the dizzy heights of Wednesday. Stephen Cook's Gross 69 (3 Under Par) definitely the standout score. However I personally was most impressed by Gary Esson`s 73(1) - 72...so what is so impressive about a 1 over Par buffer!? Well, if I told you he scored that using a set that comprised a driver, old persimmon 3 wood, borrowed demo 7 iron (yup just that 1 iron), 3 wedges and a putter! Poor Gary`s Clubs were stolen from his car on Friday night! But nobody can ever take his talent - great round!

Sat
Division 1
1 Stephen Cook 69(3) - 66
2 Craig Thain 77(10) - 67

Saturday saw 'The Developement Gang' go ahead as usual but as expected the numbers were not as high as recent weeks because of the big cup final which was very good until the 92nd minute! We still had quite a few kids turn up to the Development Gang with more now ready to start playing on the course, both in the medal and for their handicap.

Apart from the weekend past, we have been getting so many kids coming for the Development Gang at 3pm and new faces showing up every week that we have decided to split the group into two sessions. So instead of 40+ kids coming at once we will hopefully have approximately 20 in each session; first group 2 - 3pm and second group 3 - 4pm. This is just so we can manage and coach the kids more effectively and not turn anyone away, because right now there is no such thing as too many kids playing golf!!

The more senior Juniors were back in action again on the Sunday in the last of their Junior Pennant League Matches and made it a clean sweep with an impressive 4 - 1 Win away at Aboyne.

This means the team have progressed to the Semi-Final which will be played at a neutral venue yet to be decided on Sunday, 18 June. Opponents yet to be decided as there are still games to be played in that League. Exciting times for junior golf at Portlethen!

For me it`s been a very slow start to the season with hardly any events so far but that all changes as The Northern Open is on next week at Moray, Lossiemouth. I've been looking forward to this one for a while, especially being at Moray - one of my favourite courses in Scotland. The Scottish Open qualifier was there last year and the course was in fantastic condition and I'm sure it will be the same for the Northern Open so I can't wait to see what I can do.
