Firstly, did anyone expect a stuttering Sunday Spieth to all of a sudden dig down that far into his well-of-will-to-win!? Simply amazing! But we had been treated to ‘Do I believe what I`m seeing!?’ moments from the off in this event. Like Justin Thomas playing in a Tie! It`s a pity that despite looking like Harry Vardon on Day 1 he ended up playing like Harry Hill on Day 2! Then we got almost the polar opposite dressage disaster in the shape of Jason Day`s attempt at Golf Fashion with his Joggy Bottoms and Hightops! Deary me, he looked more like Marty McFly! Perhaps he should jump into the DeLorean, hit 88mph and go back to that time when he made headlines with his golf game and was World No.1!! Another former World No.1 also gave us another unexpected moment when Rory had his own resurrection of sorts. His poor form coming into the championship looked to be continuing when he stumbled to 5 Over Par for the first 6 Holes on Friday, only to then play the next 30 in 6 Under Par to get right back in contention. When you consider that after those first 6 holes he was effectively 11 shots behind, and he went on to finish only 7 behind, he had a decent event. There were more decent, if perhaps equally as unexpected, finishes from a few other surprise packages. Canada`s Austin Connelly did really well considering he`s built more like an Ice Hockey stick than an Ice Hockey Player!! But I guess like another Canadian export he possesses Austin Powers!! Yeah baby, grrrrrrr! Then we had China’s Hoatong Li who held the Long-time Lead...in the Clubhouse after his sparkling final round 63. His 7 under Par round wasn`t however the Low Round of the week! That honour went to Branden Grace with the Springbok skipping round in 62 strokes to set a new all-time low round record in a Major. Unfortunately, in my opinion, other than number of shots struck it is neither the lowest nor the best round in Major history. That surely has to go to Henrik Stenson, who only last year shot 63 (also 8 under par) in the final round WHILST being in the final Group of the day WHILST leading, and WHILST having to fend off the challenge and trade blows with his playing partner, Phil Mickelson, who just so happened to be posting the 2nd best round of the day at the time too!! Henrik put up a stellar defence of his Claret Jug but unexpectedly there was no challenge mounted by Phil Mickelson this year, and make ‘No Bones’ about it he definitely missed not having his long time Caddy keeping him right this time! Despite more Rules controversy following Jon Rahm again and Pace of Play issues coming from namely Kevin Na there were no Penalties or Disqualifications handed out. I`m guessing the reason for that was because ‘Rahm-Na-Ban’ was last month...but to be honest any group featuring Kevin Na definitely wouldn`t be Fasting!! But young Master Spieth certainly seems to be on a fast track to greatness with this his 3rd Major. Not only is he 3 quarters of the way to completing the Grand Slam but he is now the youngest to hold 3 different Major Titles...and at this rate he might not have long to wait to get that coveted 4th as the USPGA is only a few weeks away (August 10th @ Quail Hollow) and it seems that the good old BBC will be showing all 4 days LIVE after Sky`s deal with the PGA of America broke down. Interestingly the viewing figures for last year and that epic final round between Stenson & Mickelson were watched by only a quarter of those that had watched the previous year`s event, BBC`s last coverage – the Zach Johnson victory at St Andrews. Money talk`s I guess.
