Ooft! The headline writers must`ve felt like they won the lottery after that Germany v Brazil match!? With just about a every goal commanding it`s own gem that summed up the result!
1-0 Germany: "Brazil Get Mullered!"
2-0 Germany: "It Wasn`t Even Klose!"
3-0 Germany: "It Wasn`t Even Kroos!" (Beijing Telegraph!)
4-0 Germany: "Fourth Sprung From Good Technique!"
5-0 Germany: "Estadio Mineirao: You Khedira Pin Drop!"
6-0 Germany: "Schurrle Not Another One!?"
7-0 Germany: "Can`t Believe What I`m Sieben!"
7-1 Germany: "Oscar: What A Lot Of Garbage!" (Sesame Street reference!), plus "Oscar Hits The Target!" was already used for another sporting headline!!
I think it will be Big Phil with a target on his back now after that bout of Diar-Rio! I`m sure he`s thinking "Scolari, oh, oh! Scolari, oh, oh-i, oh! Let me disappear in the clouds, away from the blood thirsty crowds!"
But while the whole of Brazil will be in shock the Germans march on as they try and conquer all that are put in their way in their quest for world domination!.....erm, sounds worryingly familiar!? Oh yes, that`s right 1954, 74 & 90!!
For Brazil the pressure of trying to win the World Cup in their own back yard proved too much and as allusive as trying to find the Holy Grail!
Indiana Jones and Monty Python all went in search of the Holy Grail too but believe it or not it was actually here at Eastwood all along! Well, there are 2 of them to be precise but only if we are talking in a golfing sense!
For any golfer I`d say there are 2 sacred feats that you want to achieve, and both of them happened here at Eastwood during last Saturdays Captain & Vice Captains Prizes Competition. And No, one of them is not getting a free drink from the Captain! And no, the second is not getting a free sleeve of balls from me! (But thanks to Srixon for kindly sponsoring the Competition which allowed me to provide you all with 3 new balls for your round! I hope that allowed many of you to get past the 3rd hole!!?)
The two golfing achievements that for many can seem as distant and fanciful as the existence of the Holy Grail that I`m referring to are. (1) Shooting a gross score lower than your age, and (2) earning your place alongside the famous few that have earned the right to be in "Locker 59!", the sub-sixty Elysium! We were very fortunate to have both happen on the same day in the same competition.
You can forget the epic Wimbledon final, another spectacular showdown and showcase of some true world class talent and athleticism! You can forget the worlds fastest paper boys whizzing through Yorkshire so their "Spokey-Dokeys" don`t get pinched! The biggest sporting headlines happened here!
Perhaps our first achievement is less of a Holy Grail and more evidence that the "Fountain Of Youth" actually exists, or was it that Bill Bryson had just watched Cocoon again!? Whatever the reason, Bill has had a week to remember……….I just hope he does!? It started with Bill, who just recently turned 80, winning his Over 70`s Section in the Seniors Open on Thursday with a Nett 69.
It was a good day for home players in the Seniors Open as Jim Whitelaw (68) and Gavin Cochrane (75) were the Overall Winner and the Best Scratch respectively. No wonder they look delighted!
Other Eastwood successes were Barrie Smith (1st in the 55-63 age group with a 70), and Bill MacMillan (2nd in the over 70 age group with a score of 71).
However, for the evergreen octogenarian Mr Bryson things got even better on Saturday when he won the Sweep and 1st Prize in Division 1 in the Captain & Vice Captains Prizes with a gross 79(13) - 66! So that`s a £75 Voucher, £42 Sweep Money and a brand new pair of golf shoes all in the space of 3 days! Apparently he would have also won the Postcode Lottery but he couldn`t remember where he stayed!!
But whilst Bill`s age defying exploits were impressive he still didn`t steal the headlines on Saturday! No, that honour fell to a certain John Wilson who, in the first group out in the morning, ended the competition as a contest before anyone even had a chance! Basically because he coasted round to the tune of 79 blows for a nett 59!! Now having given John quite a few lessons and fitted him for various clubs I know John had the potential to be a far lower handicap than he was playing to but the breakdown to his round might put his phenomenal score into some perspective (and highlight to you guys the best way to lower your scores!)
John had 53 shots, of which 3 were where he nearly chipped in! That left a miserly total of only 26 putts! (11 Single-Putts, 6 Two-Putts and 1 Three-Putt!) So given his score was 11 strokes better than his handicap it`s easy to see where the difference in his game was. John is putting much of the improvement on the greens down to his decision to switch to a LARGE putter grip, similar to the style used by so many of the Tour Players. The theory behind these grips is simple. The oversized nature forces your hands and more importantly your wrists into a very different position. Meaning it`s easier to keep your hands "quiet" and passive during the stroke which keeps the clubface more stable throughout the strike.
I`m guessing John`s display on the greens was quite impressive to watch because his playing partner quite literally came straight off the course, into the Shop and asked if we could change his putter grip to "the same one that john Wilson got on his!"
It`s always good to see guys you`ve been working with having success and improving. And hot on the heels of Johns amazing score that day was George McKibbens, who also made a bee line for the shop as soon as he finished his round. George was one of the few who signed up for my "June Up" 2 Lesson Package last month. One long game session on full swing improvements was followed by a comprehensive short game session which focused on Technique improvements and Mental processes for Chipping, Bunkers & Putting. Only a few days later George had his best round ever and popped in to personally thanks me which was nice.
Georges small investment in 2 Lessons helped his game (and enjoyment) and brought a return of 2 strokes off of his handicap, and over £50 worth of Sweep Money & Prizes! Which means it practically paid for itself!! Is your game worth the gamble if you could reduce your handicap by 2 strokes for FREE!? If so why not book up today: Click here.
The rest of the field that day were almost left in the wake of these great performances but here is a rundown of the other Prize winners last Saturday.

Because of the Seniors Open there was no Thursday Medal. But the Open season continued on Sunday with the DC Miller Handicap Open. Again local knowledge proved the difference with the Top 4 spots going to Eastwood members.
Graeme May 82(16) - 66 obviously got inspiration from watching his good friend become our new Club Champion, or was it the new hybrid I fitted him for during the week!? Either way Graeme has both the title and the large Winners Voucher to enjoy. His score made him a comfortable winner by 3 shots (and it had a stableford adjusted score so there must have been a mini disaster in there somewhere too!) but the runner up position needed a backnine countback to separate them. Edging that mathematical duel was Rob Crusher 76(7) - 69, making it a good week for the Crusher family but I`ll come back to that. Settling for bronze was Phil Sherwood 87(18) - 69 and Brain Rowlands 83(13) - 70 came in fourth. Well played guys!
As I touched on earlier there was more than just one Crusher doing good good things in the golfing world last week. Rob`s son, Andrew, was doing his bit for the Eastwood Junior Section. Alongside my Junior Scholar, Ibby Hussain the pair narrowly missed out on extra holes in the final of the Tom Kelly Trophy which is part of the Fleming Watson League series. Andrew, along with Callum Taggart, also qualified for the last 16 of the west Of Scotland Boys Championship. Unfortunately Andrew lost his first round match whilst Callum was knocked out in the next round by some blistering golf from his opponent who reeled off 4 birdies in the last 5 holes of the match to beat Callum at the 19th hole.
The kids are all in action this week as it is the infamous "Junior Week" here at Eastwood. More on that mayhem next week along with how the Junior Open and Eastwood Quaich 36 Hole Scratch Open faired.
All this talk of Open`s has really whetted my appetite for the up coming Open Championship at Royal Liverpool (aka Hoylake) Tiger is back to the scene of his last Major whilst Big Phil (no, not Scolari!!) is back to defend his crown!
