Greetings from Stuart Wilson
Eastwood Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

"On your marks, get set, G…"

"You have the right to remain silent, anything you do say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Yes, apparently security is so tight at this year's Commonwealth Games even the Starter at the athletics has been arrested for being in possession of a firearm!

But the Scots are doing the nation proud with a pretty decent haul of medals at the Commonwealth Games which have already been pawned off at Cashconvertors and "We Buy Any Gold!"

I think we should have enter Andy Hutton in the Commonwealth Games and it wouldn`t have mattered what event either because regardless of what it is he seems to have the Midas Touch right now! Following hot on the heels of him picking up money in the World Cup Sweepstake, he went on to win the Open Championship Draw and the Golf Foundation Medal and did he not just go and win the Bonus ball draw on Saturday now too! If I was Andy I`d be getting the real lottery numbers on!

So it wasn`t Andy but our actual medal success has come in events such as Judo, Swimming, Cycling & Bowls which proves once and for all that we are rubbish at anything that you need to do outdoors! And wow how thoroughly uninteresting is the judo as a spectator sport! It`s just very aggressive hugging with a little bit of ankle wrestling thrown in! You`d be better off watching 2 blind drunks trying to have a square go on a bouncy castle!! Uh, there`s Chanel 5`s new prime time show for a Saturday sorted then!

Now, whilst that might make good TV viewing there is no question that the Commonwealth Games has been great to see whether it be on screen or in the flesh, and there has been a great buzz around the place. You know it`s had a tremendous impact on the local economy when you see Ibrox with a full stadium!! Hopefully like the Olympics these games will help the next generation of kids to "Get Inspired!"

Here at Eastwood we too are trying to get the next generation inspired or certainly interested in golf. It`s such a great game to be involved with, regardless of how well you can play it. From the individual challenge of trying to improve or beat the course to the social interaction and character building but most importantly in my book the morals, manners, ethics and respect it instills in people. Think about modern sports these days, Golf is one of the few left that doesn`t encourage that win at all costs mindset, cheating is accepted as part of the game or if someone`s better than you they`ll mock you attitude.

If you have a family then again there are very few sports (if any) where you can all take part together with different ages AND different abilities but all still get the same level of enjoyment out of it!? Imagine 4 people playing tennis where the adult male is really good, the adult female is a novice and the 2 children are only 8 & 10!? Someone is going to get feed up pretty quickly!

If you have kids and you`d like them to get into golf or perhaps they already play but you`d like to see them improve then I just want to make you aware of the great Junior development Options that we offer here at your Club.

If any of these options are of interest to you, you`re children (or grandchildren) then for more information or to book up simply Click Here.

One of the biggest factors in whether a kid likes or doesn`t like something is in how easy (and well) they are a able to do it. One of the stumbling blocks when it comes to getting small children to golf well is the equipment the get to use.

Clubs that are too long are a sure fire way for them to struggle. But even some of the Junior sets, although small enough, can still be too heavy, too rigid in the shaft and certainly too small in the head to allow the kids to see success and improvement. That is until now.

I have just taken delivery of some amazing new clubs available for Juniors. First and foremost the technology is absolutely spot on for allowing kids to enjoy and improve, but secondly they are quite funky and have a great wee story. Introducing "Golphin McDolphin!".........(I know you`re already thinking there is something fishy about this! But I did that on Porpoise!)

These Clubs are exactly what small and not terribly strong boys AND girls need to get off to a successful start when introduced to golf. The Irons and woods have huge but light club heads to make them easy to swing and even easier to hit. The Irons in particular feature wider than normal grooves the also help encourage more "Lift" and when you compliment that with the lightest and most flexible shaft of any Junior Club they are ideally suited to produce the ball flight that youngsters need to experience to get them excited that they can do something well!!

Golphin Clubs

Full Sets (Boys & Girls - Wood, 2 Irons, Putter, Bag AND Golphin McDolphin Headcover!!) - £149
Drivers - £35
Irons - £25
Putters - £22

School Of Golphins!

At the other end of the golphin,.....arrr, I mean golfing spectrum is a certain Bernhard Langer who very much rolled back the years as he put on a master class of golf at last week's British Seniors Open at Royal Porthcawl! I think the only thing more impressive than his play en route to a 13 stroke victory is his Tournament record to date this year. In 15 Events played he has now got 4 Wins, 3 Runners Up and 7 Top 10 Finishes (One of which came at the US Masters!) and his worst finish is T20th! This unbelievable form has, however tongue in cheek, got people touting him as a potential Wildcard pick for the European Ryder Cup Team! I think this is very unlikely however the way he is playing at the moment he wouldn`t let any side down! Perhaps Tom Watson is scouring his family tree to see if he`s got any American ancestry they can claim him on!!

One thing is for certain come September, the Centenary course won`t be running hard and fast like the burnt dusty fairways of Porthcawl that`s for sure! Even the going at Eastwood has gone from it`s usual "Good To Soft" and is now very much bounding like a fiery links course (although Sunday & Tuesday`s rain have taken a little of the sting out of it! The course and weather were in perfect condition for the weekends competitions thankfully and both were reflected in some excellent scoring.

There were 2 different events running on Saturday with the low guys (handicaps 0-12) playing 2 rounds strokeplay for the Brand Putter Trophy and sandwiched inbetween the 36 holes were the 13-28 handicaps playing for the Loganswell Cup Stableford.

The morning Brand Putter round saw Kevin McAllister take pole position in the Scratch event with a 72 to give him a 1 stroke lead over David Sibbald & John Marszol (73). One shot further back was Stevie Cunningham 74(10) - 64 who was by far and away the lowest Nett Score.

With the tournament in his grasp a disappointing treble bogey 7 at the final hole saw 1st round leader Kevin McAllister drop from 1st to 3rd in the blink of an eye and allowed David Sibbald (73 + 73) to take the Trophy. That last hole slip also allowed John Marszol (73 + 74) to take 2nd on the better last round. Austen McDowall (70) took the low round of the day and Gavin Campbell 73(7) - 66 scooped the best nett in the afternoon, but Stevie Cunningham can be very pleased with his 2 round nett total of 131 (64 + 67) which saw him knock 2 strokes off of his Handicap.

Brand Putter Results

Morning
1st: Stephen Cunningham 74(10) - 64
2nd: Kevin McAllister 72(5) - 67
3rd: Paul Conacher 74(6) - 68

Afternoon
1st: Gavin Campbell 73(7) - 66
2nd: Stephen Cunningham 76(9) - 67
3rd: Austen McDowall 70(2) - 68

In the Loganswell Cup the Full handicap Stableford showed how dangerous some of these higher handicappers can be. Stewart MacKenzie - 45 Points posted the equivalent of a Nett 61!! His points haul was good enough for a 3 point win from Baljit Sandhu - 42 points and John Harkness - 40 points.

The Thursday Medal saw good scores from Chic Goodwin 78(13) - 65, Colin Farquhar 75(7) - 68 and Alex Kyle 79(11) - 68 in Div 1. Whilst in Div 2 it was Ian McCutcheon 91(20) - 71, Derek Mann 91(19) - 72 and Billy Gregal 100(28) - 72 who took the 1/2/3.

This Saturday is the Belhaven Greensomes. Some of you may have missed the sign-up sheet for this however rest assured there are plenty spaces left if you would still like to play. The only criteria is you need a partner with a handicap to play in it!

The following Saturday is PRO`S DAY! There are now only 2 Team Spaces left for this if you were hoping to play. So call or message me ASAP if you still would like to play. For those individuals who don`t have a Team to play in and would gladly make up someone`s 4 then also let me know as there are a few teams with unconfirmed slots to fill. If you click on the link below you will see the up to date start sheets for both the Morning Betterball and the Afternoon Scramble. For those Teams still to confirm the "AN Others" can you please let me know their names or whether you need me to fill those slots for you ASAP.
