It was said, and often repeated, that the 2014 Commonwealth Games were wonderfully Scottish and that "Glasgow made the games!"

I couldn`t agree more, only in Glasgow could a worldwide extravaganza start with Karen Dunbar and end with Kylie Minogue! In many ways it represented the timeline of a hungover Scotsman having Sunday morning flashbacks of his Saturday night out!

Wakes up next Karen Dunbar! Thinks "how did this happen"? Starts trying to retrace his actions from the previous night!

He remembers stealing a bike in Kelvingrove Park! But only after running 100 meters in under 10 seconds because the Polis were chasing him because he had fired an air rifle across Glasgow Green. This coming after he had fallen in the Clyde (pulling off a triple summersault with pike on the way down!), where he used a medley of breast stroke, front crawl, butterfly before settling on the backstroke as the best way not to drown!

This all happened after losing in 3 rounds on the points decision to the tramp who challenged him to a square go after asking him for "wan o`his chips pal!

Which he recalled buying just after he had chatted up a girl who he was convinced looked as good as Kylie Minogue! But in the cold light of day he realized she looked more like Karen Dunbar!!! And this is what can happen to your perception and decision making when the demon drink starts your head "Spinning Around!"

Searching around for previous memories is an apt theme right now as it seems the once mighty, all conquering and infallible Tiger Woods needs to dig deep into the memory bank to try and get back to a time when golf was fun and easy! Another meek performance saw him withdraw after 9 holes of his final round at Firestone. Apparently as he made his way back to the locker room he bumped into Jinky McMillan who had also "chucked it at the 12th!" again!

But joking aside, Tiger isn`t right! Physically, mentally, emotionally and technically this once great warrior is a shadow (not the ITV Gladiator!) of his former self! His recent back injury means he is likely to miss this week's USPGA Championship and all but end his faint hopes of a Ryder Cup Wildcard. The final Major of the year also brings down the curtain on the Americans Automatic Qualification race for their Ryder Cup Team at a course where they last tasted victory in the match for the famous gold trophy, Valhalla! Perhaps there is a touch of fate attached to the place that named from Norse mythologybecause that Paul Azinger led team which triumphed over Faldo`s flops was the first team since 1997 that didn`t feature the aforementioned Tiger!

And here`s the biggest irony, the mythological Valhalla was an enormous hall in Asgard where those who died in battle were laid to rest! Tiger was certainly wounded in battle which now means he won`t even make it to Valhalla! Or Gleneagles for that matter and joining him on the absentees list is Dusty…..I mean Dustin Johnson, who has taken a leave of absinth from the game that speculators are saying could be linked to his own sNorts Methology! In fact I think Justin will definitely be keeping it Loki for a while!

Fortunately for the European Team we too have many guys on a high at the moment! Rory McIlroy pegs it up this week looking for 3 wins in a row, and given those 3 wins would be The Open, the WGC Bridgestone and the USPGA I think even Thor with his mighty hammer would struggle to bring him down! Although perhaps it was his Thunder & Lightening which brought about the weather delay that enabled him to leapfrog Sergio who continued his amazing run of form in finishing 2nd to McIlroy (again!) Garcia played some great stuff, including a course record equaling 61 on Friday but again the only slight sour note is he struggled to really perform at the business end of the tournament!

But all in all the European Team and their form is looking pretty good right now. I guess the difficult decisions for Captain McGinley to make are who does he pair with whom and probably worse still, who does he leave out!!? I think he`s going to have enough strength in depth to pretty much have Foursomes Pairings and Fourball Pairings with only a couple of players playing all 5 matches.

Maybe if lots of the European Team have a sudden loss of form then maybe Paul McGinley can pull in Graeme Sommerville & Derek McWilliam who showed they are pretty good at the alternate shot format when they won the weekends Belhaven Greensomes Trophy. Their 83(17.4) - 65.6 was good enough to see off John Harkness & Gary McKenzie 86(20) - 66. In 3rd place was David Sibbald & David March 71(3) - 68 who posted by far and away the lowest Gross Score. 

 

The Thursday Medal saw a real contrast of scoring from Div 1 compared to Div 2. In Div 1 Paul Houston 78(13) - 65 lead the way by a stroke from Club Champ Graeme Smyth 73(7) - 66, who edged out Ken Soutar 78(12) - 66 on the countback. In Div 2 however none of the Top 3 scores even managed to break their handicap although the Sweep money probably made up for that! Calvin Lightbody 92(20) - 72 was the best followed by Barrie Smith 92(19) - 73 which left Gerry McGeachy 94(20) - 74 in 3rd. It was the guys in Div 2 who scored magic 2`s that were really rubbing their hands though as Ronnie Waddell, Darren Moss and Alan Lang all shared the whopping £191.50 Pot! 

      
      

The Ladies Open took place last Tuesday and the good weather was rewarded with some great scoring! They play a Tri-Am bestball format. The winners Lisbeth McEwan from Eastwood with Fiona Thomson (formerly of Eastwood) and June Irons from Caldwell with a net score of 61. The 2nd prize winners were Elma Perry, Dale Reid and Lorna Boyd all from East Renfrewshire with a net score of 62. Which left Sue Fordyce from Cowglen with Sandra Goldie and Claire McKelvie both Ex-Eastwood and now from Douglas Park in 3rd with a net score of 63 on the countback.
