Greetings from Stuart Wilson
Eastwood Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

"The King is dead, long live the King!"??

A tad melodramatic perhaps, but is there some truth in that statement as the dust settled on a quite gripping final Major of the season? As the dark descended over the aptly named Valhalla resort in Kentucky last Sunday night it set a wonderfully atmospheric, unique and (potentially) poignant scene.

Rory McIlroy rounded off a quite remarkable month of golf by claiming his 3rd straight tournament win, his second Major in a row and his 4th Major of his career, and in doing so became the 4th youngest at 25 years old to reach that milestone. The only other golfers to do it quicker than Rory were Young Tom Morris, Jack Nicklaus and of course Tiger Woods.

So was the 2014 USPGA a watershed moment of the modern era? I mentioned the finally being atmospheric and unique, and no one could argue that the events on the final hole on Sunday were anything else. Never before have I seen the penultimate group step aside to allow the final group to tee off, especially given that the destiny of the Championship was in the balance. All this happened because the light was fading fast. That image of all the photographers flashes going off like fireworks against the near pitch black sky was quite incredible. But I also mentioned unique and poignant! Was this also a significant shift of power and stature in the battle to emulate Jack Nicklaus`s 18 title major haul!? By 2008 Tiger Woods had raced to 14 Majors and was odds on to beat the Golden Bears golden collection. What has unfolded in the life and career of Master Eldrick Woods has forced many to change their opinion! The great player is still in there somewhere but an unhealthy cocktail of personal issues, multiple injuries and surgeries as well as well documented swing changes have suppressed the once untouchable talent. And as Tigers grip as the torch carrier loosens Rory`s burns brighter than anyone`s right now. So was Sundays Kentucky Derby that poignant moment when the Apprentice became the Master!? Nicklaus was head and shoulders above anyone in his era, and no one came near to challenging his greatness as his career moved into its twilight, almost allowing him to "retire" gracefully to the Champions Tour in full knowledge that, to quote Mohammad Ali "He was the greatest", then along came Tiger some 11 years after Jacks last Major victory to claim his first. Rory`s quartette of Major Championships means that for the first time ever 2 golfers playing in the same era have achieved the same number of Major Titles in the same Timeframe! So now I`d like to use another famous quote that sums it nicely I think! From "Waynes World!" all that's left to say is……"GAME ON!"

Tiger's battle to be the "Best Ever" is the least of his worries just now! Aside from battling to get completely injury free his biggest battle is to prove that he`s at least in the Top 12 best players in America right now! The USPGA not only decided who got the Wanamaker Trophy but it also decided who really Wanamaker the US Ryder Cup Team. A great 2nd place finish by Phil Mickelson catapulted him from outside the automatic places to 5th on their points list. A performance that I`m sure Captain Tom Watson was relieved about. Their Top 9 is now in place and for the rest they have three weeks to prove they are worthy of a Captains Pick. So not only are these guys in a race to the Fed Ex Cup finally they are also scrambling to get to Scotland!

There was plenty Scrambling going on last Saturday here at Eastwood well certainly in the afternoon as the place was all a buzz with what many are calling (many being me, and only for the purposes of this blog!) the 5th Major - PRO`S DAY!!! (See video right)

It must be deemed fairly significant by somebody because while Hurricane Bertha was mooted, and Valhalla was being treated to some proper Viking weather! (You see I had to use an Asterix at the end there to highlight that it was important!) Here at Eastwood we were bathed in sunshine for the whole day.

Yet again Pro`s Day seemed to be a huge success and enjoyed by all 189 golfers that took part. I`ll get back to the details and results in a sec but I`d just like to take a moment to pay a huge thank you to those people who without their help and input the day wouldn`t have been any anywhere near the great day it was. Firstly to Neil and his team on the Green staff for preparing the course so well and efficiently for our early morning Shotgun start, secondly to Stuart and Steven for their help in the buildup to the event and for hemorrhaging more money at "Beat The Pro" than an RBS Manager!! I huge thanks really must go to my first class Quadruple H`s! (Halfway House Hospitality Helpers) their culinary skills, beverage brilliance and priceless patter are a highlight of the day! S thanks to Ian grant, Gibby McKinlay, Douglas Gourlay and Dougie McKay for keeping you all fed, inebriated and entertained. And nobody died…..thankfully!

The final thank you is the most important and that's to all the people who came along to take part and support my day, the feedback and all round support is hugely appreciated and I just hope that whether you were lucky enough to get in the prizes or not that you had fun during the round and left having had a great day!?

A fun day it was but it was also a competition (2 actually) none the less. The morning shotgun was at 8am (albeit slightly after 8 because, despite my best efforts to encourage everyone to pay in advance and check in early there are still those who want to rock up on the day and do it all in the last 5 minutes!!) and given that the TWO games that were meant to be hitting off at the 11th hole were still "faffing" around at the clubhouse at 7.59 the start was delayed a smidge!! The format for the morning was Betterball with the addition of a Yellow ball challenge (each player took the yellow Ball and played a hole with it. That score was marked and they ball was rotated through the 4 golfers until the yellow ball was either lost or returned with a completed score!) There were also many individual on course challenges. When all players and cards found their way back to the Clubhouse the Team who made the biggest splash (literally, as Iain King Senior fell in the burn at 18!!) the following results came out.

PRO`S DAY 2014 - Morning Betterball

1st: Iain King Jnr, Iain King Snr, Gerry McGeachy & Stephen Senior - 58
2nd: Frazer McKinlay, Ali Dunn, Richie ford & Steven Crumlish - 59
3rd: Atta lone, David McLellan, Fida hussain & Ash Nazar - 60 BIH
4th: Darrin Kirk, Doug Buchan, Norrie Cowan & Bill Jenkins - 60
5th: Derek Wark, Marc Rossi, George Roberts & Iain Wilkie - 62

Yellow Ball: Gary Potts, Graeme Cross, Phil Sherwood & John Harkness - 69

In the On Course Challenges there were some fabulous shots that won the prizes but a couple stood out in particular. Firstly at the 5th where it was "nearest In 2 Shots" and we had the unique scenario of 2 players actually holing out with their 2nd shots so 2 prizes were awarded to Paul McLuskey & Iain King Senior. Whilst at the 15th I was able to witness the Nearest The Pin shot first hand. And it was incredibly pleasing to see one of my pupils, Robert Auld with his newly fitted irons absolutely rifle one right down the flag with a crisp strike and a penetrating straight ball flight. All the things that Robert came to me wanting to improve! Now he has a nice new FJ Holdall that he`ll need to put all the other prizes he`ll no doubt be winning, if he keeps that swing going in!

NTP @ 5 In 2: Paul McLuskey & Iain King Senior (Both holed their 2nd shots!!)
NTP @ 7: David Dougan
NTP @ 11: Steven Crumlish
NTP @ 15: Robert Auld

Long Drive @ 14(Gents): Neal Peggs

The afternoon saw the good weather and good golf continue as the format switched to Texas Scramble. The start was again delayed slightly, not because of slow coaches this time but unfortunately one of the competitors took unwell. Fortunately he`s doing fine and everything carried on as planned. Special thanks to Jane Green and Sandra Goldie who`s first aid skills came to the fore in a tricky situation.

The Scramble format again produced some fabulous results and an even closer contest with the Top 4 places being separated by a mere 0.4 of a stroke! Nobody went for a dive in a hazard this time, or had exceptional hole outs, and I didn`t get to see any of the On Course challenge shots up close but again the standard was extremely high!

It seems that not only do you guys actually read this nonsense but sometimes you even listen to my advice!! Having been kept up to speed with all the goings on at Eastwood whilst on holiday the first thing Mike Robinson did when he got back was take the chance to rub the Lucky Charm that is Andy Hutton, and did Mike not just go and win the Star Prize in the Golden Ticket Draw at my Pros Day!! I'm sure Andy will get an invite if anyone drops out of Mikes Merry Men!!

Linda Hay, Scott Jackson, Derek Hamilton, Grace Jamieson, Roddy McKenzie, Rab Cochrane, Robert Auld, Fraser McKinlay. Things get back to normal strokeplay this weekend with the August medal which also means the race to qualify for the second biggest Team event this autumn returns with CAPPRO CUP Points up for grabs! SUCCESS STORY

It`s always nice to hear of a Member reaping the rewards of the input to their game that I`ve given them and last week Jim Nicholson got some instant rewards from his recent Club Fitting session. Jim was looking for a new driver that would give him a little more distance and accuracy over his current Callaway. After a Flightscope Analysis Session we were able to establish that Jim needed a lighter more flexible shaft to enable him to increase his Club & Ball speed (2 factors crucial to improve distance), we also discovered that whilst his loft was ok for his launch angle (getting the ball into the air) we needed to change his face angle to more "Closed" in order to help reduce the amount of side curvature on his shots. It was this element that made Jim`s drivers appear to go too high and definitely caused them to go too squint! As his older model Callaway did not have any adjustability to its design Jim was always fighting and manipulating that aspect to help straighten his shots out. The new technology now allows the Clubhead features to be adjusted to suit the characteristics of the shot better. The final "Customization" that we needed to make to the club was a slightly shorter shaft than standard which encouraged Jim to hit the center of the face more often which is a sure fire way of hitting straighter and maximizing balls speed (aka distance!) All this meant Jim found a driver that was 15 yards longer than his old one and much more accurate.

Only a few days later Jim won the Over 65`s Medal, had his best driving round for a long time and reduced his handicap by TWO STROKES!!!

Save shots with smarter decision making

An easy thing to say, but in the heat of battle it’s not uncommon to lose focus and make mistakes with yardages. You don’t have a caddie to pace out distances and offer advice. However, GolfBuddy’s WT4 watch can act as that calming influence, giving you accurate yardages at a glance.
