The Gift that keeps on giving! |
You could be mistaken in to thinking I`m talking about the generosity of the Rangers defence, but I`m not! But while I`m on the subject….it seems the Clubs hierarchy seem just as erratic in their decision making as their Team are on the pitch! Apparently Stevie G will soon be on hand to sort it all out! The reality though is that the Ibrox Institution has become so comical that they`d be as well appoint Ali G! At least the players would be ‘Well fit!’ I can just picture the reaction of some of this current squad when they get dropped – ‘Is it coz I is Cr*p!?’ In fact The Teddy Bears are in that much turmoil that they`d be as well appointing Amber Rudd! I`ve heard she`s just become available!? To be fair there are a good few unwanted Foreigners at the Club claiming huge unmerited financial benefits that her skills might fit right in!! But unlike overpaid, underperforming ‘fitbaw`ers’ I`d like to think that I`m the Gift that keeps on giving incredible value!?

One person who has already taken a step towards an All-Expenses paid trip to Portugal is our own Norman McBain who won the Lombard Trophy Qualifier we held last Saturday. Norman`s 82(15) – 67 was the best of those who entered the Lombard Trophy and now he heads to either Crieff or Blairgowrie to play in the Regional stage of Qualifying with the chance of a trip to the Grand Final at the Pesta Vila Sol Golf Resort, Portugal. The only thing standing in Norman`s way is approximately 70 Teams from other Scottish Clubs and the prospect of having me as his Partner! But you never know….I`ve had ‘Previous’ in this event having made it through to the Grand Finals in Las Vegas (2011) & Cancun, Mexico (2012) – Well done Norman, and wish us luck!
That Lombard Qualifier was played in tandem with both the Re-Scheduled Hippisley Cup and the Keltie Trophy (Over 50`s) – With two Trophies up for grabs there was always the chance that someone would pocket them both, and that`s exactly what happened....but it was a close call! Norman`s excellent 67 was only outdone by the Countback system! That saw Alan Mitchell scoop both the Hippisley and Keltie Trophies! That`s a good start to the Season. Saturday Results

No, this one`s not about ‘Woody’….it`s actually about Irons! A name that almost made it onto the podium and into the Newsletter results was Tom Boyle who scored 79(10) - 69 and just missed out on 3rd place in Div 1 on the countback. |
The reason I wanted to highlight Tom`s score was it coincided with his first round using his newly purchased and fully Custom Fitted Titleist AP3 Irons! I caught up with Tom the day after, as we were doing his FREE Gapping Session to find out exactly what yardages he hits his new Clubs to allow us to find the best Lofts to put on his wedges, where we discovered that he is hitting his new Clubs exactly 1 Club farther than his old Mizuno MX-25 Irons. Tom was good enough to say that: “Although I did chip in twice which helped my score the new irons felt great. The more the round went on, and the more good shots I hit with them, the more my confidence grew. I`m really looking forward to getting out more with them, but just knowing they fit my swing….and definitely now I know how far I hit each Club, I can play with a lot more belief and a lot less doubt.”

It`s not just Clubs we fit for either here at Porty, we also Fit Fit, so we can tell you fit fit fits fit! Our Shoe Fitting/Foot Measuring Service is quick, easy, FREE and is so important in getting you into the correct shoe! Just last week I was able to show 2 Non-Members that they have been wearing Shoes that were up to FOUR Sizes too big (that is including Half Sizes!) When I asked Customer 1 what Size he normally wears he replied – 8 or 9……the reality was his Foot Size required a 6 but in a very Wide Fit. He walked away with his first pair of Golf Shoes that truly fitted his feet, and will last longer because they now flex in the correct areas of the shoe. Customer 2 started by asking if we had any Size 11 or 12`s!! Again after measuring his foot we found he again was much smaller but wider ending up in a 9.5 Wide.
|
And right now I can save you ‘Pounds & Pain` when you get fitted for the correct size Pair and Trade In your old ‘Ill-Fitting’ Pair! You could save UP TO £20 OFF a Pair of FootJoy or adidas Shoes* (*Selected Styles and sliding scale Trade In Values dependant on Model) So why not pop in to take advantage of our FREE Foot Measuring Service and have a look at our Shoe Trade In Offers.

One of the people I referenced in the above section was a junior visiting from Banchory for the first of this seasons Junior Pennant Matches. Perhaps an unfortunate reflection of how Junior Development is at many other Clubs but Banchory couldn`t field a full Team for the match, mustering only 7 bodies for a 10 Man Event! Whilst many people may hark back to golden generations of yester-year and think that our current Junior Section is toiling, rest assured we are healthier than most with a fantastic Development Group in place to help continue the flow of Juniors into the main Section. The Team got off to a great undefeated start with a 4.5 – 0.5 victory.

Last weekend we once again had a lot of children for the Golf Gang. It`s great to see so many children taking an interest to the sport. The first session we had 25 children for coaching for an hour who then all progressed to do the mini course that we set up around the perimeter of the range. The aim to continue to better their score each week and hopefully progress onto the course. The second hour are mainly beginners that have come from the local schools, so focussing more on their movements and getting the basics right is just as important, if not more important, than swinging the club recklessly! |
On a Monday and Friday night we run junior classes from 5-7pm. Fridays junior class unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the bad weather but will hopefully return this Friday if the weather is behaving. In the 18 Hole section it was congratulations to Evan Fulton who won the Borland Bogey Trophy with a score of 1 down. A Bogey Competition is where the player uses their Handicap to play Matchplay against the Course. A winning ‘Holes Up’ Total would mean the Player reduced their Handicap. A Player would play to their buffer by only being the same number of ‘Holes Down’ as strokes over CSS they are normally allowed.

Alan, starting a trail of an exciting addition to your Saturday Morning experience. ‘Halfway House’ Coffee Van at the 10th Hole. I`ll let Alan speak for himself as he had this to say:
‘A warm welcome from myself Alan Fulton owner of Cafe2U Aberdeen South. Being a long time member of the golf club an on course refreshment option I’ve always thought to be a nice additional touch to offer the members throughout the course of a medal round. The Committee have agreed to have four Saturday trials covering 5th-26th May 2018.
The nuts and bolts of the offering; Opening tee time weekly until 12noon, tee time will have the option to use the facility. Our menu offering will be espresso based coffees, teas and hot chocolates. There will be a discounted cost of £2 per hot drink throughout the trial period.
|
| Halfway House |
Physical operating plan Van to be on 10th tee from 7:30 each week until 2:30. First week each group will be given a menu and a loyalty card, to place your order simply send a text to me on 07751959474 on the 9th tee staring your tee time and order. On completion of the 9th and start of 10th your order will be ready to collect. To keep the pace of play nice and smooth I would respectfully ask to grab your order and keep playing. Orders can be settled by either cash or debit/credit card. Example order; Tee time 8:32 2x latte 1x black coffee 1x hot chocolate. As this is a trial offering I will be open to any ideas from the members to extend the offering whether it be a hot food option or soft drinks etc.’ |

This week`s TPI is the 90/90 Test. It tests how much external shoulder rotation you have, important in creating good rotation in the back swing. It is also testing how much scapular stability the shoulder has. If the player has limited scapular stability there may be a loss of posture/flat shoulder plane present in their golf swing, commonly present with junior golfers because the weight of the club is too much rather than a physical limitation.
To perform the test, stand tall and keeping your arm straight, raise until level with your shoulder and then flex the arm at the elbow until it`s at 90 degrees and the palm of your hand is facing towards the floor. Now, extend your arm back as far as possible, without any pain, as shown in the image. You should be able to get your forearm equal to your spine angle or greater than, again as shown in the image. |
Please note that good posture must be maintained throughout the test and no cheating by moving the positioning of the elbow. |
Many of you ask for our advice when buying something new in-store, so we thought we’d showcase our top shoes for 2018 in this week’s newsletter. Drumroll, please… |
