But in the case of the European Tours 'GolfSixes' it was a full on 'Caddyshack 2'!!...trying too hard but ultimately disappointed! Maybe it's just me but I don't see anything about the format or the production that is either exciting or entertaining!? I know I had a rant about this last year but if my Social Media feed is anything to go by then many of my fellow Professional colleagues and avid Golfers feel exactly the same as me again this year! So if the sole objective of events like the GolfSixes is to appeal to, inspire and attract new blood to the game then I just don't think Greensomes Matchplay is the best way to do it from either a TV Coverage or live event perspective. Tour Golf Events are essentially unique sporting occasions when you think about it. Thousands of spectators turn up but at no set time - there's no 'kick off', 'tip off', 'face off', 'starters pistol', 'coin toss' - Yes there are Tee Times but very rarely do Spectators at a Golf Event follow 1 specific group from start to finish, with the exceptions being if they know that player personally, they are their favourite or its Tiger!! They wander around or park themselves at one place, go for lunch or just watch players practice. All 'Stadium Sports' not only have a set game time but they also produce some sort of definitive result - it might just be a head-to-head result to move to the next round like Tennis, Darts or Snooker, but you watch something come to a conclusion, that only happens late on Sunday afternoon in a Golf event. But at Golf events spectators are happy to simply watch and marvel at the ability of top players hitting what are essentially random isolated shots. Perhaps much in the same way spectators camp out at various places around the track at Motorsport events to marvel at the speed and skill of the Drivers & their machines in what are ultimately small, blink of an eye chunks of action!...but again, that race they are watching has a climax and a result that day! So if a change away from the traditional 72 Hole Strokeplay is needed to inspire and entertain a new batch of golfers then you need to show these great Pro's hitting more shots not less!! If it was me tasked with creating an Exhibition style event then I'd make it a Scramble. Perhaps letting the Teams play as Nations or for even more 'theatre' a Pre-Tournament 'Team Generator' to pick/create random 4 Balls. Force the players to have Maximum number of certain shots (Drives, Putts, etc), get Juniors involved whereby they get to Putt for the Pro's on a couple of the Par 3's!? And definitely make it a Shotgun Format (Morning & Afternoon) so all the players are out at the same time, with the Ticket money and Prize fund all going towards Charities of the Teams choice. All the Teams would promote their designated Charity on their Clothing & Caddy Bibs! With all the Players playing from the same & best spots all the time would really showcase the player’s talents which, I think, would make for great TV & Real Time Spectating! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what would make for good exhibition golf!?
