I know I`ve been a bit out of touch with current affairs lately but surely I`ve picked this up wrong!?

Prince Harry is about to get married to the TV Star Miss Marple!?....No!? Ah, oh it`s on the TV she`s often seen in Suits!!....so you mean to say he`s marrying Angela Merkel!!!?? At least that`ll keep the German side of the family happy!

Yes, come Saturday the eyes of the whole world will be on Windsor Castle for the latest Royal Wedding and while the majority of the British Taxpayers are tuning to see just what and where their money has been spent, the rest will be itching to see if Miss Marple....I mean, Miss Markle`s father will turn up to walk her down the aisle.

If Mr Markle doesn`t make it I know that Harry has already consoled Megan with the news that his Daddy also can`t make it to their big day....because James Hewitt hasn`t even been invited!! If Megan doesn`t get walked down the aisle by her father Harry has promised she won`t miss out on another wedding day tradition....and he will in fact lift her in his arms over the threshold of their wedding suite!....Megan however is a little worried at the prospect of having to commit to Harry Carry!

Still at least there`s one good thing about the Royal Wedding being televised....it finally gives the Rangers Fans something to watch that they can cheer about!

Tour News

It was certainly a day to remember for another American last Friday at the Players Championship….but this time it was more a Webb-ing Day to remember! Former US Open Champ, Webb Simpson, blitzed the field and the Course at TPC Sawgrass with a 9 Under Par, 63! Not bad when you consider he even threw in a Double Bogey 5 at the signature 17th Hole. That round set Webb up for the remainder of the Tournament as he held on to a 5 stroke lead from that moment on….however Sunday did give us a glimpse….perhaps into the past, but more likely of the not too distant future….of a certain Red Clad Assassin (No, not Deadpool!) marauding through and up the leaderboard.

For 13 Holes it was vintage Tiger Woods again! On the Birdie Barrage and chasing down the seemingly uncatchable! This time he ran out of gas and birdies, before he too found a watery grave at the short island green 17th. But when you hear the man himself taking about ‘winning again is not far away!’ you know he means business.

And to keep it on a Marriage theme, if I was asked the question ‘Do you think Tiger will Win again!?’ – I`d say ‘I Do!!’

Penultimate Hole Pressure

Webb & Tiger weren`t the only players to find a water grave at the 17th with many balls ironically hit that never ‘Sawgrass’ again! But I want to quickly share a story from my recent game back at my Old Club, Eastwood.

I annually get invited back to play in a fun challenge match. The format is Greensomes Matchplay and involves a few ‘On Course libations!’, with the match finely in the balance myself and my partner were 1 Up and about to play the second shot into 17. My partner was playing my Tee Shot with our opponents already on the Green.

I`m not sure if it was the Pressure or the Pernod that kicked in but this was my Partners attempt to hit my ball with an 8 iron!!!....and no the ball hasn`t moved from its original position!

That Swing Wasn’t Even In The Same Postcode As The Ball!

I thought we were almost going to have our own ‘Webb Simpson Story’ on Saturday when Chris Scouller, playing off 12 H`Cap, skipped around the front 9 holes in a Gross 32 (4 Under Par)!

But if the Front 9 form was in the mould of Webb Simpson unfortunately his Back 9 was more in the style of Homer Simpson! D`Oh!! Still I`m sure Chris would`ve taken a Nett 68 before he had Tee`d off! Perhaps he shouldn`t have had that Donut at halfway!?

After such a nice day on Saturday it was really disappointing that Sunday was such a wash out. That really hampered the entry numbers and we only had 7 people take part. That shouldn`t take away from a really good round from Alex Handsley.

Success Stories

It was really nice to not only see some great performances from Members who have recently invested in Lessons or Fitted Equipment from myself. But also be good enough to give me encouraging feedback as well.

On Saturday Steven Wallace posted a 71(3) – 68 having only had a Lesson on the Thursday. Steven had played on the Wednesday and struggled with both strike and direction. A tweak to his Posture allowed him to engage and move the parts that should have been moving (Body & Arms), which in turn allowed him to quieten the parts that were becoming too unpredictable (Hips & Hands).

After his good round Steven popped his head in and was good enough to say: “Hit it much better today. Strike was good and I was able to keep the Driver much more in play. Set Up still feels a little strange but at least I`m now thinking positively about what I should be doing and not chopping and changing from shot to shot!”

Upcoming Event

During the week an Email was sent to all our Over 50`s Gents regarding a new event that has been launched by the PGA and details of the Clubs Qualifying Round.

Incase you missed it and it is relevant to you here are the details of the Clubs Qualifying Round and the Eligibility Criteria.

• Open To ALL Players 50 Years or Older.
• Players Must Have An Active Congu H`Cap.
• Qualifying Round: Sunday 27th May*
• Entry Fee: £2
• Best NETT Score On The Day.
• Players Must Be Available To Play Regional Qualifier – 19th June & Grand Final – 31st July & 1st August

*This is being run in conjunction with the Club Championship 2nd Round meaning 6 & 7 Day Members are already entitled to enter, but we are opening up the Staysure Qualifier only to 5 Day Members who meet the Age Criteria. Those 5 Day Members will be allowed to Book any time after 2pm the usual 9 Days in advance however if there are any earlier Tee Times unused within 48 Hours of the Competition Date then the 5 Day Members can move their Tee Time forward.

As you may have seen in a recent email to you, the Committee have organised a Members Forum Evening which, they hope, will be a good catalyst to the strategy & planning for the future of Portlethen Golf Club. As an important and integral part of the Clubs fabric you, the Member, are invited to have your say by attending this Members Forum which will be facilitated by Scottish Golf.

It is taking place this Tuesday 22nd May at 7pm

Ross - The TPI boss

Following on from the last TPI screening which was the standing 90/90 test, this time try the same test except in your golf posture.

Compare the two results between your standing test and golf posture test. Check if you have more rotation when standing than compared to when in your golf posture.

The results should be similar but if there are any differences it will indicate you may have some stability or rotational issues within either shoulder joint. The image here is a reminder in how to perform the test.

Junior Section

Saturday saw another sunny day for the Gang to enjoy. 45 children played this week and it was good to see so many coming back after the 4 week trial period. We welcomed two new members in Katie and Ben who both indicated they had enjoyed themselves and would be coming back.

Scores on the mini course were pretty good considering how long the grass was! Well done to Casey for the most improved score.

Six players contested the Nine Holer and the scoring was fantastic with four players producing improved scores.

Leading scores were Conan Campbell 67 nett 23 (great improvement from his 80 last week), Isla Smith 76 nett 24 (88 last week which shows what a difference a bit of putting practice can make!!), Blair Cranston 59 nett 34 (also a good improvement from a 76 the previous week).

Lowest gross - Rhea Watson and Blair Cranston with 59.

And lastly a shout out to William Lloyd on shooting an excellent 72, nett 66 in Saturdays Junior competition and now playing off a Handicap of 5!

What's your go-to club?

Some rounds our driver is our best friend, consistently finding the fairway and not putting us into any trouble off the tee.
