Another interesting thing I noticed about the coverage of both events was that not only were the Top 2 in each tournament using the latest TaylorMade M Series Drivers, but so too were many of the other players who featured throughout the week. Players like Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Ross Fisher & Matthew Fitzpatrick. Of all the other players in contention, they virtually were all using the Callaway Rogue or Epic Drivers! Messrs Noren, Aphibarnrat & Grace at Wentworth and Argentinean Emiliano Grillo at Colonial. I found that interesting because it absolutely mirrors that of the 2 stand out performing Drivers in the Majority of my Club Fit Sessions. Most Golfers are finding 1 or the other is giving them noticeably improved performance WHEN FITTED CORRECTLY! On Monday we had the Callaway Fitting Experience drop by and like my findings it was interesting to see the gains some folks were getting. I`ll share a couple of examples with you in a second, but the main factor that is allowing these Clubs to improve people`s Driving is the their ability to reduce the ball spin and increase the ball speed, which in turn means the golfer can afford to increase the loft of the Club and typically reduce the length of it. So, why are these two factors so important? Well, the more loft you can have on your Club the straighter you will hit the ball, and the shorter the club length the better you`ll hit the ball. So if you can find a Driver that allows you to hit the ball straighter and better, with a flight that gets in the air without spinning up too high then that is a recipe for longer straighter shots! This was evident with 3 of the members who came to get Fitted. Jason was the most interesting case, as he came looking for a 3 Wood essentially because, in his own words “has never been able to hit a driver well” – Once Roger (the Callaway Fitter) and I explained that the main reason he has struggled with a driver and found more success with a 3 wood was for all the reasons above. Once Jason was given a Driver with a shorter shaft, plenty loft and some DRAW enhancing head weight he was hitting the Driver straighter and longer than he could ever achieve with a 3 Wood, plus the far bigger head and hitting area gave him much more forgiveness on the odd mishit that every golfer suffers from. If you struggle to hit a Driver and get better results from a Fairway wood, it`s probably for these reasons. Get properly Fitted and you could unlock your real driving potential!
