Yes, the events at Shinnecock Hills (a course so named because the semi rough went up to your shins, the second cut was up to your knees and the thick rough was....much higher again!!) was eventful to say the least! The last man to successfully defend the US Open was Curtis Strange in 1988 & '89, but although Brooks Koepka emulated that feat this year it was all the other talking points that made this year’s events feel like an episode of 'Stranger Things'! The mixed weather during the first 2 rounds saw many top names miss the cut. Then came the Saturday afternoon fiasco, where the course set up wasn't befitting of the weather conditions, which saw not only all the late starters tumble to high scores but a few of the early, low scoring, starters climb to ridiculous heights on the leaderboard. None more so than Daniel Berger & Tony Finau who both climbed from 41st place to JOINT FIRST!! What also wasn't befitting was Phil Mickelson's actions and reaction to these course conditions which saw him strike a moving ball in order to prevent it rolling somewhere unpleasant! That incident alone has already been a topic for much debate in the Professional Shop this week, and around the globe too I'm sure! What's your opinion on it? But when you strip all the controversy and course set up away you're left with a fantastic achievement from Brooks Koepka in successfully defending his title and a terrific performance from Tommy Fleetwood that saw him pushing Big Bombing Brooks all the way! |
