Sunday night saw the BBC crown their 2018 Sports Personality Of The Year which is clearly a mouthful that the Hitman Hatton couldn't master, so I think the abbreviation SPOTY is better! Because let's be honest, as a review of the whole of Sport for the year it's a monumental abbreviation.......in order to make room for ALL THE FOOTBALL!!! If you were Scottish and a Golf Fan it was fermenting somewhere between blood boiling and TV launching!! Summed up in a 10 minute segment! Those 10 minutes could be broken down into 20 second summary of the Golfing Majors Section which included Georgia Halls landmark Women's British Open victory, and 9 minutes and 40 seconds for mmmmmmmgrrrrrarrrrggghhh.......(trying to bite lip!!) The blooming Lightening Seeds, Frank Skinner & David Baddiel, 3 gazillions Lions and a dagnam homing pigeon caught in a football!!! And what did they bring home?.......4th!! That, not even good enough for a podium finish, performance was deemed successful enough to land Gareth Southgate the 'Coach Of A The Year' award!! They played 6 games of football and he only won 3 of those over the normal 90 Minutes and lost twice!! But apparently it inspired a Nation!.....just not ours obviously! Harry Kane even got shortlisted for the top SPOTY Award but ultimately did better than his entire England Team......because he at least managed to finish 3rd! One thing I learnt about Harry Kane after listening to him speak.....there's no way he could've bitten his bottom lip! Then there was the lifetime achievement award which went to Billy Jean, who for obvious reasons is not my lover, she's just a girl who claims that I'm not the one! And Billy the Kid is not her son! But what about Billy the Kid! Billy Monger was a name I hadn't heard of, but his story was tear-wellingly inspiring! A young boy clearly so passionate and talented for Motorsport. There's no question he was destined for greatness, then fate dealt him a hand. An unavoidable yet horrific accident saw him lose both lower legs. Whilst the accident took away his limbs nothing was going to take away his determination and will to succeed! Inside 12 months he had not only mastered and got back on his prosthetic feet, but he had also got back inside his adapted racing car and was competing once again! And he's only 19!! That's what I call inspiring!! #billythkid #billywhizz Geraint Thomas, the Tour De France winning Cyclist, scooped the man Award and he does seem like a top bloke, and down to earth with it, but whilst I fully admire the endeavour and endurance that goes into that pursuit I struggle to give any credence to a Sport that has, and still is, rife with so many doping and performance enhancing (aka cheating) scandals! The golfing bias at least got to cheer when Francesco Molinari, quite rightly, was awarded the Irish Award - That's the O'SPOTY!.........(psst, it means Overseas Sports Personality Of The Year!)
