It`s tough to argue against, but equally as tough to argue at all, because just as different as each of the sports are to one another, so are the challenges, the challengers and the prizes at stake. Could Stephen Hendry with his 7 World Championships and total dominance of Snooker through that same period be a contender? Can Jackie Stewart, the 3 Times World F1 Champion lay claim? Was the lack of Global Superstars enough to discount the achievements of both Young & Old Tom Morris claiming 4 Open Championships each!? Would Sandy Lyle`s 2 Grand Slam triumphs in the modern era trump those of the two Tam`s? But as challengers to that Title go then the achievements of Sir Chris Hoy, with 19 Golds (Olympic, World Champ & Commonwealth Games) 9 Silver & 9 Bronze be enough to tell Andy to ‘Get on his Bike!?’ I for one wouldn`t! And think Master Murray stakes an even better claim! Perhaps not in top end accolades, but 3 Grand Slams and 2 Olympic Gold`s in the greatest ever era of Tennis (I don`t think that`s up for any debate!? Even by the greatest players of yester-year!) is a monumental ‘Return’! When you consider that to reach the summit of his sport, which he did by reaching the No. 1 Ranking as well, he had to excel on multiple surfaces, play from week to week and was competing against freaks of nature like Roger Federer, who`s 106 years old! (20 Grand Slams), Rafa Nadal, and his bionic arm! (17 Grand Slams) and Novak ‘Gluten Free’ Djokovic (14 Grand Slams). Can anyone (who`s not a Pursuit Cycling fanatic – or Alco-HOY-lic!!) name any of Chris Hoy`s biggest rivals? I`m not in the slightest a Cycling fan but even I can reel off quite a few ‘Household Names’ in Lance ‘Needle I The’ Armstrong, Greg ‘Vodka &’ LeMond, Alberto ‘Larry Grayson Catchphrase’ Contador, Bradley ‘Even My Sideburns Couldn`t Slow Me Down’ Wiggins, Chris ‘Soundeffects’ Froome, Geraint ‘The Tank Engine’ Thomas. And none of them were the guy that finished 2nd to Chris Hoy! But we`ve already named 3 of the very, very best that Andy Murray had to overcome to get his 5 Major accolades! Plus, Chris Hoy is far too smiley and personable to be a proper Scot! Andy portrays and represents our Nation much better! Miserable, angry, crabbit with the odd bought of sarcasm breaking out! Plus he`s much closer to ginger on the pigment chart! So because of all of the above, he gets my Vote! I wonder if this vote would be as ‘close’ as the recent Commons Vote!? May-bies aye, May-bies naw! I think poor Theresa needs a short holiday. Maybe wouldn`t head to Europe though! Perhaps she should try Hawaii.
