It was more a matter of UN-Necessary amount of time in the Golfing World at the weekend. Firstly, Matt Kuchar eventually did the right thing by coughing up a more appropriate sum of money to the Mexican Caddy, David Ortiz, who ‘Loopered’ him to victory last year in the Mayakoba Classic. For those of you who don`t know the story, Pre-Tournament, Kuchar hired Ortiz as his Caddy for the week and agreed a $3000 Fee. He then preceded to win the event pocketing $1.3 Million Dollars! With standard Caddy percentages normally around 10% of the winnings Ortiz was only given a poultry $5K! Word of this got out, Social Media blew up, Kuchar defended his actions, Social Media blew up some more, Kuchar`s treatment of a Mexican national saw him become second favourite to be the next US President but eeeevvvveeeennnnntttuuuuaaalllllyyyy Matt Kuchar caved and came out with a ‘sincere and apologetic’ statement that even Tiger Woods would`ve been proud of! And more importantly he also paid $50,000 to David Ortiz. But if you think Kuchar`s apology and pay out took too long that`s nothing compared to the antics of JB Holmes as he slothfully crawled to victory in the weather-interrupted Genesis Open. Despite shooting the lowest score and winning a great event against a stellar field, all the headlines, focus and talking points were about his, at times, ludicrous Pace Of Play! Namely on the Greens where he proved he`s no relation of Sherlock, as time and time again he relied way too heavily on a ‘Green Book’ to crack the case – A topographical over view of the slopes and gradients of each putting surface, which, when combined with the green speed that day, can basically chart how much break/borrow to allow for on each putt. All too often he was taking way more than his allocated time to execute his shot. And the piece de resistance was summed up when he straddled and plumb bobbed a 12 inch putt!! If he keeps taking that long to line up some of his Putts we`ll need to start calling him Aimin’ Holmes! Not everyone was agitated by his time wasting. In fact there were 2 very excited people waiting on JB when he sunk the winning Putt. His wife and young son, Tucker were there at the 18th, but to put into context how long the final days play had taken, when JB started the final round he didn`t even have a son!! Over on the European Tour it couldn`t have been more opposite with ISPS Handa sponsoring a Tour event for the second consecutive week. This time it was the World Super 6 event in Perth, Australia. Another event focussing on 6 Hole Sprint Knockout Matches. The players had 3 rounds of Strokeplay to qualify for the Top 24. This saw the Top 8 Players ‘Seeded’ into the Quarterfinals, then the remaining 16 square off for the chance to face them. Then it was a case of who could be fastest out of the blocks over 6 Holes in head to head Matchplay. Two Scots, Robert MacIntyre & Connor Syme, made it through to the Matchplay via an 11 Man Playoff and low & behold did they not end up drawing one another in the Knock Out. At least that meant we had a representative in the Quarterfinals with Syme sneaking through by 1 Hole over his good friend. Unlike the snoozefest over in the States, the action in Perth was fast and furious. Encapsulated best of all by eventual Champion, big hitting Ryan Fox, son of former World Cup Winning All Black Grant Fox. Ryan got off to the perfect start in the Matchplay, well certainly the engravers breathed a huge sigh of relief, when he beat Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond (pretty sure his friends call him JJ!?) Then there was Norway he was going to lose to Kris Reitan, and Irishman Paul was well and truly Dunne in the Semi. Meanwhile in the Final, Matchplay specialist Spaniard Adrian was well and truly Otaegui-n to the cleaners.
