Something that did jump out at me whilst watching the Golf Coverage that I feel will help your game was summed up by 2 incidents that had a major bearing what I`ll call ‘Success & Failure’ – The difference between making your score the best it can be or throwing away the makings of a good round. I see and hear this a lot from Club Golfers, but over the weekend we saw that even the very best players don`t get it right all the time. I'm of course talking about – Decision Making! Jim Furyk just missed out on the title, but on Saturday whilst playing the 18th he was faced with a ‘Decision’ – With his ball only just staying dry on the left side of the 18th he was faced with the dilemma of trying to play an aggressive shot to the green from a stance that was precarious to say the least. A few attempted practice swings convinced him it was too risky, so he opted to chip back into play and to a Yardage he was comfortable pitching from – Ultimately that dropped shot cost him the tournament, but his decision allowed him to still remain a contender and finish the tournament with as low a score as he could. On Sunday, overnight Leader, Jon Rahm was in a fairway bunker at the Par 5 11th. Despite clear and correct advice from his Caddy, Rahm attempted to go for the Green in 2 from the Fairway Bunker with a shot that required him to carry an expanse of water and another bunker all whilst trying to bend the ball around some trees!! As the Commentators mentioned, there`s no doubt that Jon has the ability to hit that shot, but he will never pull it off every time (which he didn`t) but more to the point he really didn`t need to at that stage of the round/tournament! He was tied for the lead, and had even more chance of making a birdie 4 by taking his medicine (ala Furyk) and putting trust in his Pitching – a shot he had a higher percentage of pulling off. Even his Caddy couldn`t help but shake his head at the Players choice! So the moral of the story is – Evaluate the situation and chose to play the Shot you know you can pull off, that will give you the least risk and the most reliable reward.....and not the Shot you think you might be able to conjure up!
