Back here at Duddingston I had my first experience of running a ‘Silloth!’ If, like me, you had never heard of a Silloth before it is essentially an alternative Best Ball. Teams of 2 mark down their best Scratch Score at each hole then deduct a ‘Team Handicap’ at the end. That Handicap was worked out by the same formula used Alan Turing used to break the Enigma Code!!! I think it goes something like this: - Subtract the Lowest Handicap from the Highest - Subtract that number from 18 - Move Rook to Queen 4 - Show your Card to the Audience then place it back in the deck - Spell Mississippi backwards - Add your Date of Birth to your Mother`s Maiden Name - Divide by Pie Pretty straight forward really. Anyway, what transpired is something that I`ve seen many times before. Mid-afternoon on Saturday lunchtime Ian Park took a cancellation spot as a late entry in the last tee time of the day alongside someone he`d never met before. 24 Hours later, they posted the last scorecard and were duly crowned Silloth Champions! Results 1st Alex Salter & Ian Park 76 – 8 = 68 2nd Gerry Paver & Russell De Smet 77 – 6 1/3 = 70 2/3 3rd Malcolm Roberts & Jim Penman 73 – 2 = 71 Scratch Prize: Gus Santana & David Downing 70
