Another event that seemed to get finished much quicker than expected was the GolfSixes! A complete enigma of a Tournament if you ask me! This year it was played in Portugal, started on Friday and it was finished by Saturday! Which makes me beg the question – What`s the point of it? Which also leads me to another question – Is anyone else worried about what the European Tour is becoming!? This year especially we have had a few weeks with no event, and already we`ve seen The Super 6`s, The Belgian Knockout and now the GolfSixes since the turn of the Year. Meanwhile, all our Top Players are ploughing their Trade Stateside. The most notable, Rory McIlroy, not only won the Canadian Open in blistering fashion whilst on the same weekend Thongchai Jaidee inspired `Thai Two-man Team’ winning the Golf Sixes in Portugal (You see, there was a tenuous link in my opening paragraph!!) But back to McIlroy for a moment, his 7 Stroke victory almost brought about the coveted ‘59’ in his Final Round surge and show`s he`s in top form going into the US Open at Pebble Beach this week – However not only is Rory concentrating his schedule around the PGA Tour Events, he has, at this point, stated that he won`t be taking up his European Tour Membership meaning, unless that changes, he won`t be eligible for Ryder Cup Selection! Now if the sole purpose of the European Tours ‘funked up formats’ is to encourage and inspire ‘new blood’ to the game of Golf I think they`re totally missing the point, or maybe it`s just me doing all my thinking on a drunk moonwalk home in the wee hours of the morning!? But people, especially kids, will be more inspired by seeing the very best in the business doing what they do, like a Rory McIlroy in full flight pounding a 330 Yard Drive arrow straight, than they will watching Tongchai Jaidee wafting a 7 Iron from an Astroturf Tee over a Swimming Pool!!! I`ve said it before (basically this time last year about the same event!) but irrespective of whether you are at the event ‘Live’ or watching it on TV you will only ever be experiencing ‘bitesize moments’ of action – A Drive, an Approach, a Bunker Shot, a Putt. You will never be watching the outcome of a Golf Event in its entirety like you would do at a Football Match. Recently Sport has had some of the greatest talent that`s EVER been seen! – Messi & Ronaldo, Federer & Nadal, Hoy & Wiggins and obviously Tiger Woods – Do you think kids would`ve been more inspired if now and again the Footballers had to play a 7-A-Side match, or the Tennis Players had a game of Swing-Ball or to see which Cyclist could do the fastest Paper Run!? I get that shorter events would be more attractive, and make golf more attractive for, amateurs looking to fit it into their hectic lifestyles – but that`s not the job of the Tour Professional to provide that – It`s the Clubs and people at Club level (Myself included) that need to provide that level of entertainment. What Tournament Golf (and the Players at that level) need to do is speed up! Watching Federer & Nadal slug it out for 5 Hours in an epic 5 Set battle is not tedious, watching Top Golfers take the same amount of shots that they could`ve (aka should`ve) taken in 4 Hours that they took 5 & a half hours to complete is TEDIOUS!
