Narcissistic posturing, attention seeking, clambering for popularity, bickering, squabbling, lying and all in an attempt to win. Yip, it doesn`t matter if it`s the Tory Leadership battle or Love Island that is pretty much the description you get in the TV Guide! And people wonder why I like and watch Comic Book Superhero Movies and Animated Films! It`s because they`re more believable!!!

Fortunately I can always rely on Sport to provide me with excitement, entertainment and authenticity! The Women`s World Cup for one has shown me that we truly now live in a world of equality, and perhaps that women definitely can do things much better than the men...because even the events of the `78 World Cup and the ‘efforts’ of Ali`s Army can`t hold a candle to the calamitous ‘despair from the jaws of elation’ the Scotland Women`s Team were able to grab against Argentina last week! 3-0 up with 21 minutes to play and coasting into the next round, we then managed to produce a perfect hat-trick of disasters! ‘The Quick Reply’ to quash all momentum, ‘The OG’ to ensure the early onset of Squeaky Bum...but then, as they say when in Paris, the ‘piece de resistance’ in the dying embers of Added Time – Concede a penalty, save said penalty, have VAR overrule saved penalty, give them a ‘second serve’ at the penalty – ‘Yer Teas Oot Hen!!’ But fear not oh sport loving Scots, as our `White Knight` has re-appeared on the horizon, albeit on an invalid scooter and not a magnificent stallion, never the less all hail Sir Andy – Murray Scot Of Queens! Yes, with a new hip that he had to wait 18 months on the NHS to get, and some freshly purchased shorts, t-shirt & trainers from Sports Direct courtesy of his benefits cheque, Andy is back in the saddle and ready to ride again. It didn`t take long for him to get back to winning ways, but his victory at Queens was more Batman & Robin, than the solo Superman effort we`re used to seeing him perform. It`s great to see arguably Scotland`s best ever Sportsperson back in action, but I wonder how long it will be before we get our next true Sporting Champion?

We crowned all of our own ‘Champions’ over the weekend here at Duddingston, in what was my first Championship Finals Day. And what a fantastic, enjoyable and exciting day it turned out. Whilst undoubtedly the main event was the Gents 36 Hole Club Championship final, the afternoon was when ALL the action took place. This saw the Junior, Ladies, Seniors & B Section Finals contend their 18 Hole Finals. In the Juniors, Blair Welsh always seemed to be in control as he successfully defended his Title from 2018 with a 3&2 win over Kieran McMillan. The early stages of the Ladies Final saw momentum ebb and flow either way before Sandra Richardson pulled clear around the turn, eventually seeing off the challenge of Margaret Keith at the 14th.
|
It was similarly one-sided in the B Section Final where Jason Coughlan came up against a formidable performance from Gino Rigitano, who despite struggling with a sore back, got the job done by hole 12. Unfortunately, Gino`s injury meant he wasn`t able to stay for the Prize Giving. Many predicted that the seniors might have been a lopsided affair with 9 strokes being the difference in the Handicaps on show, however, Alex Kemp had belied his 10 Handicap throughout the entire tournament seeing off opponents off 5, 5&3 in the previous 3 Rounds. With that ruthless streak, people were wondering if it was actually Alex who was one of the Kemp brothers who portrayed ‘The Krays’ in the 1990 Film!? He was almost at it again in the Final against Keith Millar, and with only 8 holes to play the match was All Square. But this wasn’t Keith`s first rodeo and he certainly wasn`t going to give up his title without a fight, so he stamped his experience and ability on the match and was eventually able to cross the line on the 15th Green.

That fittingly ‘cleared the decks’ for the main event which was turning into a cracker. The morning 18 Holes had seen 2008, 12 & 13 Champion, Davie Miller establish a 4Up lead, which had been as much as 5Up after 15. Perhaps sneaking that 1 hole back before lunch was the pick me up that Defending Champion, Ben Alexander, needed? |
A superb eagle at the 4th in the afternoon sparked Ben further into life and reduced the deficit to 3. That quickly became 1 before Davie won 11 (their 29th) to restore a bit of a cushion. That cushion remained until the 30th where an uncharacteristic 3 putt handed the momentum back to Ben. It was becoming a real Cat & Mouse game now, but with the large crowd licking their lips at the prospect of the final going the distance it was perhaps less ‘Tom & Jerry’ and more ‘Ben & Jerry’! And go the distance it did. By the 32nd it was All Square, before Ben made the killer move by Birdieing the 35th to go ahead in the match for the first time since the opening hole that morning! With even more people gathered at the Clubhouse the guys got the type of crowd their efforts that day, and the entire week, deserved. Dave pushed Ben all the way with a sublime Chip that all but went in the hole. That said, take nothing away from how impressive the up and down from the Bunker to win from Ben was. A fitting end to a terrific day`s golf. |

On Monday of this week, James set out on his quest to make it to Portrush when he pegged it up in Regional Qualifying at Goswick.
Despite Monday exposing the Country to some horrendous weather, fortunately Goswick wasn`t hit with the worst. That said it was a challenging day so James` 2 Under Par 70 was a great effort.
Although as it stands it has him as 41st reserve for the Final Qualifying Stage of which there are 4 Venues, so the dream right now isn`t over. Fingers crossed James gets the call to say he`s moved up. |
|
The dream is still very much alive for anyone with aspirations to Qualify for the End-Of-Season Ryder Cup style match – The Cappro Cup. If you haven`t already entered the Qualifying Race there are still 6 Events left and 330 Points per Division left to take advantage of. It only costs £5 To Enter and the fortunate 24 that make it to the End Of season finale are treated to a fantastic 2 day event.

Playing a par-3 over water is as much a mental test as anything else. After all, if it was just light rough between you and the green, would you still hit panic mode? Of course not, so what can you do to keep the nerves at bay and ensure your ball sails safely over the drink? |
| Stay calm and don't panic! |
|
The biggest obstacle to overcome when playing over water is not actually the H2O, but rather your own mental barrier. Here's our advice: - Focus on a point behind the green that is in line with the flag. This can be a tree, branch, it could even be a leaf – anything just so long as it pulls your eye-line away from the wet stuff and closer to the pin
- Stay relaxed. You have hit the ball a million times before so there is no need to panic now
- Stick to your pre-shot routine. This is the best way to stay in the moment and make your next shot seem like any other
These tips will have you relishing those watery par-3s but if you find yourself still struggling with some of the tougher shots in golf, then speak to a member of the team about a lesson so we can iron out any kinks in your game.
