You`ll never guess what I saw the other night in next doors back garden! My neighbor had made this fishy broth but it was stinking their house out so much that they put it in the back garden. Once darkness had fallen I noticed in the shimmer of the moon light there was what looked like a little dog-like critter in a sequined jacket wearing an alice band on its head to keep it`s fur out of the way as it lapped away at the soup. I thought, that`s weird to see a camp wolf eating from a pan of fishy broth!
But then I remembered, like the rhyme teaches us too, that it was the 5th of November so it must`ve been….what for it!.....you`re going to love this…………..Gay Fox and the Clam Chowder Pot!!
"BOOOM!! BOOOM!! CRACK! FIZZ! WHIRR! BLAM! B,BLAAAAM! WHIZZZ! WHIZZZ! WHEEEE! WHOOOO! WHEEEE!! PUCK, PACK,PUCK! BOOOM! FURRRRR! BOOM!........Whizzz…..wheee…….poooof!........pffffff!"
There it is! That`s the quality content and creativity this multi-nominated, award winning column has been built on!
But, just like an Asda Smartprice firework, as usual it`ll start with an impressive bang, an acceptable fizz then come crashing to earth before it`s even got going!!
No sooner have we got Halloween out the way then it`s straight into Bonfire Night! So out of the cauldron and into the fire you might say! The eagle eyed of you last week might have noticed that I was sporting a hefty growth compared to my usual smooth, well groomed jaw line! This was neither a build up to Movember or just laziness! No, like with most things I do, this too had a purpose! For one night only I took to the streets as… Wolverine!
Now the hairy chin I could do! The vest, shirt and jacket I already had! The ridiculous hairdo, well I pretty much didn`t need to do a whole lot different to every other day! (I thought I`d get in there first before anyone else did!) Cigar and dog tags were easily purchased! However, 6 adamantium claws (metal, for the non X-Men geeks out there!) that protrude from between my knuckles I was struggling with a little.
But being the creative type a quick trip to Poundworld (yip, no expense spared on this project!) and £4, 6 toy pirate swords and a pack of hair scrunches later and, v`wola! It`s knife to see you, to see you knife!
Knives, Camera, Action!
It was good to see the TV programs got right into the spirit of things! The X Factor producers did a great job of making sure the contestants were frighteningly bad for Halloween as opposed to their usual everyday dreadful that we`ve heard in previous week! Simon Cowell appeared like Dracula in a very menacing and thunderous cloud of smoke, while the other judges only came on with a little poof….....of smoke!
Over on Strictly.. It was good that they let Brucie join in the show last Saturday night!......oh, nope….my mistake! Apparently that was a prop corpse that was just part of the set! But, didn`t it do well!!
Other people that did well were right here at Eastwood. Even more scary than Halloween was the fact that we were back in Medal action on Saturday! The Winter medals are held once a month and only over 15 holes, but they do qualify for the Medal Finals and have Sweep & Two Money up for grabs for those who wish to enter them.
Unfortunately for Graham Murray, Halloween lightening struck twice as, similar to the October Medal, he had the best score in Division 1 AND two Magic 2`s but unfortunately wasn`t entered in to either of those Sweeps!
So Grahams 62(8) - 54 didn`t really benefit him at all as he is already qualified for the Medal Finals. Taking advantage in the Sweepstakes was Gavin Cochrane 57(3) - 54 who moved into 1st, Gary Faulds 63(7) - 56 and Bill Jenkins 61(5) - 56 who both also moved up some spots because Callum Taggart 59(4) - 55 is still a Junior.
Division 2 was far more controversy free with Brett Fawbert 64(12) - 52 edging out good friend and playing partner that day Rab Cochrane 65(13) - 52 on the countback. Third also after a countback was Bryan MacKay 66(13) - 53.
Division 3 saw our lowest score of the day with Tom McGuire 68(17) - 51 leading the way from Mark Brotherton 68(16) - 52 and Darrin Kirk 67(14) - 53.
There was more celebration of Prize Winners on Monday as the Junior Section held their AGM and prize giving! The AGM part lasted less time than the aforementioned Asda firework and went something like this.
Captain Crooks: "Can we have a proposer and a seconder for the minutes of last years AGM?"
Proposer is - Nod, Seconder is Hmph!
Captain Crooks: "Matters arising?" - diddly!
Captain Crooks: "election of office bearers!"
Hmph took over the Captaincy from nod!
Captain Crooks: "Any other competent business!?"
WHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhsssssshhhhhh - Tumbleweed!
Captain Crooks: "Meeting adjourned!"
Captain Crooks: "short break for drink and crisps!"

Whilst the Junior Section is getting smaller and the nucleus of the keen and dedicated getting smaller again it was pleasing to see that of the 10 different boys who collected Prizes on the night, 5 of them had been on my Junior Scholarship program. Significantly in the 6 years I`ve awarded it 4 of those boys have gone on to represent the Gents Brand Putter Team (Graham Adams, Callum Taggart, Ross McGinness & Ibby Hussain) while I`m sure it wont be long before the likes of Andrew Crusher and Matthew Duffy will be doing the same thing. Andrew(2012) and Matthew(2013) were this years Junior Champion & most Improved golfer respectively, and Ibby Hussain who was this years Scholar not only had the biggest haul of prizes but also narrowly missed out on the "Most Improved" title by reducing his handicap from 8 to 5 this season.
The 2015 award has gone to another of the long line of Duffy brothers to come through the Eastwood Junior ranks. Following on from Jamie, who is now moving out of the Juniors, and Matthew comes Connor who I`m very much looking forward to working with next season.
Many of you maybe looking forward to next season already too? Perhaps many of you have reflected on last season and are thinking of the areas of your game that let you down, need improving or are just downright non-existant!?
Well perhaps there is no time like the present to right these wrongs so that when next season comes round you are ready! Ready to do better, ready to enjoy your golf more, ready to be more successful!
But, if you`re going to improve you need a plan! You need to know firstly WHAT needs to improve, WHY it needs to improve, and HOW you are going to set about improving it!
Now, you might already know yourself WHAT needs to improve. You might also already know yourself WHY it needs to improve! But do you know HOW it`s going to improve? Practice might help!? But remember "If you always do what you always did, you`ll always get what you always got!"
