One of the attractions of making my move to Edinburgh (other than the Job) was the Summer Festival – Or ‘The Fringe’ as it`s affectionately known.
However it seems like in my first year here I`ve taken ‘The Fringe’ too literally and found myself being on the outside looking in, and perhaps I need my Fringe trimmed because I haven`t managed to see a bloomin' thing!
|
As the curtain falls on the Fringe, a statement which in itself sounds like a bad 90`s Rick Astley haircut, the Annual ‘Best Joke Of The Fringe’ Awards were handed out and I have to admit that whilst I did like it, I was surprised that it was worthy of an award! Especially given that I can hear the cyber-groans loud and clear when I expose you folks to, ahem, ‘material’ of similar quality (or lack of) on a weekly basis!
The Joke in question was delivered by Olaf Falafel (I think his name is funnier than his joke, but I might have gone for Olaf Manickers-Arringin!) and it was; “I keep randomly shouting out ‘broccoli’ and ‘cauliflower’ – I think I might have florets!?”
Simple, clean......and one of your 5 a day! Surely what was funnier though was it was a Vegetable Joke made by a Swede! And the fact that it was the first Scandinavian to claim the Prize in itself was a ‘turnip’ for the books!
If the Award-winning Joke inspired me to do one thing, it is to start eating healthier. Long Summer Days in a Pro-Shop do nothing for a well-balanced diet......especially with a chocolate laden fridge only a matter of metres away from someone with a tooth sweeter than a Jelly Babies bahoochy!
In an attempt to lose some weight I went on that new fad-diet where you only eat Toilet Paper – but I think I was becoming Andrexic! (Booooooo, Hissssssss – Gerrrrofffff!)

From the Fringe to the Fairways and we did have some bonafide Comedians here at Duddingston on Tuesday when a craic-cophony of Comedians from the Fringe came to play the Course.
If you were wondering if they were funny in real life I watched them all Tee off and it was pretty hilarious! One-Shot, in particular, didn`t even make it off the end of the Tee – But perhaps I shouldn`t ‘Mock The Weak!’ |

It was much more serious stuff on the Fairways of the various Tours worldwide. None more so than in the U.S. as the race to become the FedEx Playoff Champion got one step closer. At the BMW Championship, the Top 70 Players were all trying to finish well enough to claim a Top 30 position in the Points List so they could advance to this week`s Tour Championship. Justin Thomas spread-eagled the field with an incredible 61 (11 Under Par) in Round 3. Although Patrick Cantlay got within 2 shots of JT midway through the back 9 on Sunday, it was a reasonably comfortable victory for Thomas in the end.
For another Thomas (Pieters) it was a bit more ‘Cat & Mouse’ over at the Czech Masters where he managed to hold off the charge of Double A! Yes, Spaniard Adria Arnaus was Energised and Ever Ready but ran out of juice to get him over the finish line. I guess the Big Belgian runs on Duracell!?

We had some rousing finishes of our own during the Duddingston 2-Man Better-Ball Open here on Sunday.
Whilst the Overall Handicap Title went to the visiting duo of Tom Stewart (Stirling) & Malcolm Clark (Alloa) with a fantastic 65, and the Scratch Title went to the all DGC Pairing of Miller & Banks (which incidentally were their only career opportunities when these 2 were kids!) – David and Alan combined to shoot an impressive 70 Gross in really blustery conditions.
But the real headlines were made by the Team that finished 2nd. Coming to the last Barry Sutherland & Darren Baird were not only trailing their playing partners, but essentially nowhere in the hunt for prizes either. But when Darren slam-dunked his wedge shot for a closing 2 they leapfrogged their playing partners score, shot into second-place courtesy of the Countback which went all the way down to the ‘Best Last Hole’ and Darren also won the Nearest The Pin In 2 @ 18! I just wanted to take a moment to congratulate and share the performance of David Downing last Wednesday. |
When I started in February David was one of the first few Low Handicap guys I got to meet, as he was playing regular Club & Team Winter League golf. Even back then, and as the Season (and course condition) has progressed David always bemoaned his Putting and how it was letting down his good Long-game. As many of you do, he battled on trying to make it better and hoping it would improve.
Again like many of you, it didn`t so (after a few conversations about it) David bit the bullet and booked in for a Putting Lesson. That was on a Thursday, fast forward to the Wednesday and David came to me to let me know he had just had his best Putting Round EVER!
The adjustments and improvements we made during the Lesson were subtle and simple but were all linked and therefore contributed to a more reliable method.
Some were to Set Up, some were to Stroke and importantly we also made an important adjustment to his Putter (Not a new Putter I hastened to add). |

The Technique IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT in hitting good shots, however, I know the importance of well-fitting Equipment and improved Technology.
For some Companies and their Products, it is nearing the time where some Models reach the end of their Sales Cycle, which inevitably means they will be super-seeded by a newer version. Sometimes it`s a complete revamp like the new Titleist TS Iron Range, but other times it is taking a great (and popular) product and freshen it up whilst making it better.
That`s exactly what I believe TaylorMade have done with their P790 Iron. This initially launched 2 (yes TWO!) seasons ago and was a fantastic addition to the Iron range (not just TaylorMade's but the industry in general) – The reason being it was the first time that an Iron that looked so sleek and traditional but was packed with distance AND forgiveness had been unveiled. As a result, it was suitable for a whole spectrum of golfers.
The Elite Players who prefer more ‘Look & Feel’ all of a sudden were able to harness ‘Distance & Forgiveness’, the Player who either used to be low but recognised their game needed more help didn`t have to sacrifice the ‘Look & Feel’ of their Club, the Mid-Handicapper who could only dream of using a blade-looking Club now had an option that didn`t compromise the ‘Forgiveness’ they needed.
|
Now TaylorMade has launched their P790 upgrade. I have played the original P790 since it launched, and I`ve hit the new version and I can say with 100% certainty that it`s better. I`m not saying that it`s going to guarantee more Distance for you, but I`ve picked up more Ballspeed & Lower Launch which has definitely given me more distance on both my best and off-centre hits. But the biggest improvement I`ve experienced is the Feel of both (Good & Bad) strikes has improved massively. Throw into the mix that it also looks, sleeker and shinier, it is definitely getting a thumbs up from me. So much so that I ordered my set as soon as I saw it (and no, I don`t get them for Free!!)

There are any number of online tutorials giving you the 'perfect advice' as to how to cure a specific problem you may have with your game. However, the key to solving most issues in sport (golf included) is to go right back to where it all began - the fundamentals. |
The way you set-up to the ball writes the script for the swing. This may be one of the more basic elements to the game but yet it is also one of the most overlooked – and that can be dangerous for your scorecard. Jack Nicklaus once said: "If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world” Who are we to argue with the Golden Bear? So, if you'd like a check-up of the fundamentals, get in touch with a member of the team using the button below.
