‘Don`t Just Book It........You`ll End Up Rookit!’ |
If you`ve got any notion to have adventures or excursions abroad, for future reference, avoid anything that the Cook Family are involved in! Ever since great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great Grandpa Captain James ‘Endeavoured’ to find and name all the places that makeup ‘abroad’ things have gone downhill for the Cooks! Uncle Robin didn`t have the best of times as Foreign Secretary and now wee Tommy, who promised to take you to the airport for your long-awaited luxury holiday in the Seychelles, has just text saying he won`t make it now because his Nissan Micra has just failed it`s MOT! Now you`ve had to buy a 4 Man Tent and head to Blair Drummond in a Skoda Octavia that you`ve hired for only £40 from SIXT! ‘Mwahahahahaha!’
Yes, news broke this week of the demise of the Holiday Giant – Thomas Cook – which has seen thousands of employees lose their jobs and even more holidaymakers left up Merde River without a pedalo! But was this all a massively misjudged attempt by Boris Johnson to convince those, who he feels need convincing, about Brexit!? All these Brits desperately wanting to leave Europe for the sanctuary of the UK.
|
Something that did return to the UK successfully last week was European Tour Golf in the shape of the Tours Flagship Event – The PGA Championship.
|
This was another event that had to react to the shuffling of the Majors schedule which saw the week at Wentworth move from its usual May date to one late in September. All in all though I think it benefitted from the later date. The feedback from the players suggested that the course condition was better, the weather was terrific and the quality of the field vastly improved on recent years. Probably because the important events on the US Tour are all over now with the Top 10 featuring the likes of Rahm, Reed, Horschel, Rose & McIlroy.
Top of the Tree was Danny Willett, who showed again that his game, confidence and form are back from the brink. The former Masters Champ really struggled after his win at Augusta in 2016. But his 3 Stroke victory over Jon Rahm not only brought him his 2nd Victory in a year but also catapulted him to the top of the Ryder Cup Qualifying points that started that week.

Our own ‘Ryder Cup Style Match’ – The Cappro Cup takes place here at Duddingston in a little over a week. This may be the first playing of the match here at DGC but it is an event I have been running at my previous 2 Clubs over a 9 Year period.
We finalised the 24 Players to take part last week and, due to a tight timeframe, I matched up the Team Line Ups.
So here are the Pairings & Matches for the Opening Days play on Saturday 5th October:
Captains Team v Professionals Team
Match 1 David Downing & Alan Knox v Stuart Knox & Neil Aitken
Match 2 Dave Davies & James Walker v Simon Graham & Dave Brogan
Match 3 Dave Gordon & Gerry Paver v Wasim Ahmed & Derek Bell
Match 4 Steve McManus & Bob McWalter v Scott Brown & Eamonn McHugh
Match 5 Derek Lyall & Willie Bowie v Alvaro De Melo & Bob Dudgeon
Match 6 Gavin Morrison & George Malloch v Owen Maxwell & Roy Bloxham
|
It was all about Teamwork on Saturday too as I chalked up another ‘first’ here at Duddingston. That being my first (of many) Pro`s Day Events. |
Like Wentworth, we were blessed with amazing weather which always makes fun days like this much more enjoyable. Unlike Wentworth there were no superstars on show, but thanks to the Great Spirit and enthusiasm shown by a few there was definitely a few sights to be seen! |

The event itself was packed with entertainment with each Hole having an individual Challenge prize up for grabs. Some more straight forward than others.
|
The Team format saw the front 9 being played as a team Better Ball with the added twist of a Yellow Ball relay running alongside. The Back 9 switched to a Team Texas Scramble and there were Prizes handed out for all 3 Formats and the Overall Scores.
I even made sure you were in the running for a Prize just by TURNING UP!
Here are the winners from an extremely enjoyable day – Roll on next year.

Without further ado, let us introduce TaylorMade’s scintillating Milled Grind 2 wedge and look at why it's such a good option to be putting in the scoring part of your bag. |
| TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 wedges |
|
Now this wedge is quite unique. It's all to do with Raw Face Technology, which increases spin and feel compared with the original Milled Grind. Not only that but whilst the face rusts over time, the rest of the head will maintain its sleek finish. |
They look stunning, they perform superbly and there are plenty of options available from a loft, grind and finish perspective. All that's left to do now is to come and try them out yourself the next time you're down the club. |
