Scotland V San Marino.
10 Footballers of extremely limited ability who patriotically turn up to represent their Nation knowing full well they have a snowflakes chance in hell of winning, playing in front of a Goalkeeper who faces more shots than WWII Court Martial and keeps a hiding from turning into an annihilation... versus San Marino!
|
Yes, our National Footballing pride took another kick in the Gorbachevs during the week against Russia which saw us lose badly in the Luzhniki. But on Sunday we got the chance to momentarily experience what ‘that’ feels like. When I say ‘that’ I of course mean, passing a football accurately to a fellow teammate more than just once in a move! Keep some semblance of possession in and around the oppositions penalty area, and actual get to celebrate a few goals and a win! Thank you San Marino ‘Haste ye back!’
Joking aside for a second, whilst this group of Players may not be the best we`ve ever had, and who knows if they are in fact the best we`ve currently got, I truly believe they are out there trying their very best. But what was evident against San Marino, especially from the goal scorers, that it meant a lot for them to score for their Country. The jubilation that the youngsters Shankland, Findlay and hatrick hero, John McGinn showed tells you everything you need to know about the pride and passion it gives you to represent your Country.
Which seems particularly poignant in a week where ‘Representing YOUR Country’ became a talking point. Steven Caulker (yip, not exactly a household name) has been touting himself as a possible Centre Half option for Steve Clarke`s Scotland Team. Caulker was born in England to English parents and represented England at every level including the Full National Squad – But because that was only a Friendly and he has a Scottish Grandparent he apparently is eligible to play for Scotland! There`s no way you can have the kind of Pride & Passion that playing for Country should inspire, when it`s your 2nd choice – If you get the chance to represent your country it`s because your Country CHOOSES YOU!
If that scenario irked me, then the Rory Sabbatini story breaking has really boiled my preverbial! For those of you unfamiliar with golfs other Rory, he is South African by birth and upbringing, has plied his trade for many years on the PGA Tour and is a resident/citizen in America. He has represented South Africa in the World Cup and reached the pinnacle of National pride when he was selected to compete against the USA in the Presidents Cup as a South African. But in a desperate bid to play in the Olympics, now that golf is an event, he like Caulker found a loophole in his family tree that allows him to claim Slovakian Nationality. This now makes him eligible to play in the Olympics as their highest ranked Professional Golfer – but also, as he is now technically a European Citizen, he is contemplating joining the European Tour and making a bid to qualify for the Ryder Cup!
No, no, no, no, NO! Stop it, just stop it now! Are we slowly turning into a Society that can choose what we want, when we want, and everyone else just has to comply with our demands? Biology has clearly been cast aside in favour of ‘identification’ and now Geography seems to be next! So just for the record I want to eat as much Junk Food & Confectionary and not put on weight or have health complications, not practice and play Tour standard golf (don`t say it!), shower in Jack Daniels and never get hangovers, not do a stitch of work and live a Millionaire lifestyle (don`t say it!)
Single-minded-ness does have its positives too though. Mind-over-matter, a dedication to succeed, a determination never to quit. All that can only come from a belief, a belief in yourself and your own abilities & boundaries. This was never more evident than last Sunday when the Kenyan athlete, Eliud Kipchoge, became the first person to run a marathon in under 2 hours, breaking the seemingly untouchable 2 Hour barrier by 20 seconds. Impressive stuff but now he has to do it again, dressed as a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
|
Not to be outdone, and in a period when Pace Of Play has become a constant talking point, Thomas Pieters also broke the 2 Hour Barrier – Not for 6 Holes this time thankfully! But for 18! He completed his final round at the Italian Open on Sunday in 1 Hour and 59 Minutes. I suppose the bad news for Thomas was he was able to set that incredible pace because he was last playing on his own!
At the other end of the field, Bernd Wiesberger was setting an equally as impressive but ultimately different kind of Pace. The big Austrian has hit a remarkable run of form since returning from injury earlier in the Season. His victory in Italy was his 3rd in the last 5 Months and has seen him catapult to the top of the Race To Dubai and inside the World`s Top 25. His highest ever World Ranking. Right now he is very much on track to make a deserved debut in the Ryder Cup.
Another player setting career highs and an on-course trajectory for the Ryder Cup is Bob ‘Boaby’ MacIntyre. The southpaw Scot continues his meteoric rise up through the golfing ranks. He posted his 5th Top 10 finish in his Rookie Season on the European Tour and is now the 86th best Golfer in the World! That makes him the No.1 Ranked Scottish Golfer replacing Russell Knox. All this in his first year on the Main Tour and only his 2nd season since turning Pro!

Achieving success and improvement in your 1st Season must be extremely satisfying and the latest Medal winner here at Duddingston must be over the moon at doing just that.
Jill Gibb is not only one of our newest Members but also a newbie to the game of golf, having only just taken it up through last years ‘Get Into Golf’ Initiative. On Saturday she posted a Nett 65 to win by 2 clear strokes – And a word of warning to everyone because I don`t think it`ll be the last great score we see from Jill as she was clearly taking it easy on you all! That 65 included a 12!
|
| 1st - Jill Gibb - 119-54=65 |
| 2nd - Ian Edmond - 94-27=67 |
|
| 3rd - James Smith - 81-12=69 |
| 4th - Scott Speakman - 73-4=69 |
|
I wanted to use Jill`s success as an example of the keys to improvement because it mirrors exactly what I try and encourage all my Pupils to recognise.
TRAIN IT – TEST IT – TRUST IT!
Jill has been a constant figure here at the Club this Season, practising and playing as much as she can and is now feeling confident enough to play in the Competitions. Which as you can see is paying dividends.
You have to learn (and earn) all the various Skills you`ll need to play a round of golf AWAY from the Course (Driving, Fairway Woods, Irons, Wedges/Pitching, Chipping, Bunkers & Putting). You then have to see if you CAN execute these learned skills on the Course whilst also learning/discovering a Strategy to play each hole, a process to help you select the appropriate shot at the correct time and how you apply your skillset to an ever-changing exam paper. Finally, you then have to put all this into battle and learn to make a sequence of scores where you have to control your emotions more than your ball, regulate your concentration but not overthink it, react to going off-plan and manage your game based on your ability and not your ambition.
So remember, if you want to make next Season better than this start the process now.
Train It – Off the Course Test It – On The Course Trust It – In Competition
If you only do one of the above you`ll struggle to see improvement. If you only Practice you`ll struggle to learn how to score. If you only Play you`ll struggle to improve. And if you only Compete you`ll struggle to gain or maintain confidence.
Why not use this Winter to work on and improve all the different Skills you need to use while playing?
The SW:ING Studio here at Duddingston gives you the very best environment to do that and weather & daylight aren`t a factor.
To Book a session – Click Here
|
The SW:ING Studio also provides so much more than just a place to have a Lesson. Remember you can use it to Practice in a comfortable environment with accurate Data & Feedback. But more importantly it can be used in a very sociable way too with yourself and up to 3 of your golfing buddies using it to have some fun playing Simulated Golf – we have a library of 8 Courses at present with the pick of the bunch being Pebble Beach & Spyglass Hill. |
I will be looking at Events & Initiatives to play in the Studio in the new year, but in the meantime why don`t you and your golf buddies come along and make us of this great facility instead of putting your Clubs (& yourself) into Golfing Hibernation!? Evening times are available and you could even book your slot to coincide with the Golf or Football Coverage that you can watch whilst playing too.

Pop into the pro shop to pick up a bargain! |
Since the game began in the 15th century, there is one thing that has never changed – the ball being the only piece of equipment used on every shot. Despite this, it still gets a raw deal with some golfers viewing it as less important than the clubs used to hit it. So, we decided to take a look back and see how modern golf balls compare to those of yesteryear. |
| Wilson Staff's DUO Professional golf ball |
|
In the beginning Feathery balls reigned supreme for over 200 years in the early days of golf, but even they are relatively new compared to the original hairy balls (guess what they were stuffed with!). It's hard to imagine what it would be like playing with those balls these days, and even the later-developed Gutty and Haskell balls left golfers with little-to-no room for error.
|
Where we are today There was no such thing as compression 100 years ago, yet today Wilson Staff is producing golf balls that lead the way in this department, providing an incredible feel for the golfer. One such ball is the DUO Professional, which also boasts impressive distance and is available in more than just the normal white finish that we've come to expect as standard. |
