Well, hasn`t that just been another humdinger of a week!
Joyous scenes everywhere!!!

Quite rightly it was ‘Ladies First’ in the Storm stakes, but once Hurricane Ciara had had her frenzy the coast was clear for ‘Dennis’ to breeze in – he was definitely just more of a menace than anything else, occasionally showing his teeth…..or was that Gnasher!? The ferocious gusts certainly meant the wind chill had a bit of bite. Fortunately, the Course didn`t suffer from any significant ‘Storm Damage’ and seems to have bounced back reasonably ok, and the aeriation work carried out to the Greens certainly seems to have worked well as they dissipated the surface water swiftly and successfully. It just needs a little bit of TLC now.
On that note, I can report that Valentine`s Day passed without incident…which was disappointing but not surprising! My hopes were raised slightly when I saw the bright Red Envelope poking out my Letter Box on the 14th, but it turned out to be the Final Notice that my Gas & Electricity was being cut off…so ironically it was a Candle Lit Dinner for one after all! Although I had been looking forward to a nice hot Fillet Steak and not Carpaccio! The only good thing about V-Day is that there are now huge discounts on boxes of Chocolates! When it comes to that dilemma ‘what do you get the woman who has everything?’ I`m sure Type 2 Diabetes is not the correct answer!… and I`m pretty sure Coronavirus would be a close second!

One thing that does seem to have been contagious is that winning feeling amongst Australian Golfers. At the weekend Adam Scott became the 5th Australian Golfer to win globally since the catastrophic Bush Fires engulfed large stretches of their Country. Clearly a case of ‘Follow You, Follow Me’ so it was quite apt that Scott`s victory continued the Aussie conveyor belt at the Genesis Open as he joined the list of Cameron Smith (Sony Open), Marc Leishman (Farmers Insurance Open), Lucas Herbert (Dubai Classic) and Min Woo Lee (Vic Open) to lift a Title in tribute to their Homeland.
It was strange not having an Event on the European Tour which saw a few Players drop down and play in the Dimension Data Challenge Tour Event in Fancourt, SA. It was no great surprise to see the Top 3 and scoring dominated by Players from a higher level. That trio were also all South African too with Christiaan Bezuidenhout topping the tree on 25 Under Par from George Coetzee (-24) and Richard Sterne (-22).
Next up is a WGC Event down in Mexico. This is the Course that plays 2,400 meters (7,870 ft) above sea level, meaning the Golf Ball travels a considerable amount further – but it`s not a simple calculation because all the distance increases vary depending on the club you are using and how it launches and spins. So the gains could also be very different from Player to Player.
This means there is a lot of preparation work to be done by both the Player & Caddy. This process is massively helped by the technology available to the modern Player. Launch Monitors, and especially in this scenario, Radar will allow the Tour Players to know exactly how each Club will perform in the high altitude environment.
|
But ‘Knowing Your Numbers’ should be something that any and every Golfer understands. Not only is it important to allow you to perform with confidence on the Course because you know the exact Club for the yardage you are about to play, but it also will highlight potential ‘Gaps’ in your Set Make-Up.
This was exactly the scenario that played out the other day when a Member came for Club Fitting – His intention was to purchase a new 3-Wood.
The main catalyst was he just didn`t hit his current 3-Wood consistently well enough. So we, first of all, evaluated all the other options he had in his bag from his Longest usable Iron to his Driver. This is what we discovered:
• #4 Hybrid & #3 Hybrid went essentially the same distance on both Carry & Roll-Out – But #4 was easier to launch and much more consistent in both Distance & Direction • 5-Wood & 3-Wood proved to be a similar scenario. No extra distance from the very best shot with his current 3-Wood and much less consistency and control.
We tried the new 3-Wood he had his heart on, but as suspected, even the new design and technology did not improve his ‘3-Wood performance’. To help him understand why ANY 3-Wood didn`t automatically go further than his 5-Wood (as most people would assume) I explained it to him the following way:
I had recently fitted him for a new Driver – Part of that Fitting was finding the optimum Loft to enable the best Launch for Distance and also the best Loft for consistent Direction. That meant we settled on a 10.5° Loft – Using the Fairway Wood logic that would mean that if I gave him a 7.5° Loft he`d hit it further. But common sense meant we both agreed that it`d more likely make the Driver be harder to hit consistently or straight. So, the same applies in this case – if we take 3° of loft off the 5 Wood and put a longer shaft in (aka a 3 Wood) then the ability to hit that Club consistently diminishes.
So the recommendation was instead of investing in a £200+ 3-Wood, we were actually able to drop 2 Clubs from his current Set. This created an opportunity, because on closer inspection of his Set it was apparent that to accommodate all those Fairway Woods/Hybrids he was only carrying a Pitching Wedge and a 60° Lob Wedge. Having saved 2 Clubs from the other end of the Set we looked at bridging the gap between PW & LW. With the benefit of the Launch Monitor & SW:ING Studio facility and the fact that we carry all the lofts in all the Makes/Models of Wedges we quickly were able to find the most suitable Loft Gaps. The Foresight GCQuad also has a fantastic ‘Find Your Numbers’ Gapping function that makes gathering the Data simple, and also projecting your Average Club Distances and highlights any noticeable ‘Gaps’ in-between Clubs.
|
So rather than spending hundreds of pounds on a Club that ultimately wouldn`t have made any difference to a Players game, we were able to provide a cheaper solution but an improved performance. I`ll say with a lot of confidence that that sort of outcome for the ‘Customer’ would not happen in a High Street or Superstore environment.
Hopefully another example of a good reason to entrust us to improve your golf and game enjoyment here at Duddingston GC. We are constantly trying to improve our performance and service levels to you, our Members.

One exciting piece of news that I know is guaranteed to improve things both in the Professional Shop and for the Club is the announcement that Scott Grieve will be joining our Professional Shop Team as ‘Head Of Junior Development’. Scott might be a name and a face that some of you know or recognise?
A former Junior Member here at DGC, Scott pursued a Career as a PGA Professional which took him to the post of Head Professional at Turnhouse GC and latterly as Senior Coach at Loretto School. In both these previous Positions Scott was heavily involved in the development of Juniors and it is that area of growth that will be Scott`s primary focus as we make strides to build the flow of Junior Golfers back into the Club.
Scott will of course also be spending time in the Professional Shop and filling the void left by James at the end of 2019. I`m sure you join me in wishing Scott a warm return to Duddingston and he will be taking up his post ominously on Friday 13th March!

FREE Align Grip Promotion Our 2020 promotional campaign gets underway this week, we have teamed up with the #1 grip supplier Golf Pride to offer you a FREE re-grip on your 7 iron.
Take a look at your grips, you may feel they are ok but if you compare them to a new grip you will be surprised at the difference. Even though they may not look worn, grips get worn and a bit shiny over time, the consequence is that you start gripping the club harder which leads to poor shots and higher scores.
Pop in-store with your 7 iron next time you are down at the club! |

A recent golf survey highlighted some very interesting statistics regarding golfers' habits and their equipment, two of which you can see in the image below. |
These stats might not mean a lot to you at face value, but the general recommendation is that you change your grips once a year, especially if you play regular golf. The truth is, grips lose their efficiency over time and when they do we end up gripping the club too tightly, which restricts our ability to swing the club freely. Just something for you to think about... | |
|
It's not only important that your grips are regularly replaced, but you need to ensure you get the correct sized grips. Our FREE grip fitting promotion has just started in-store and we recommend everyone giving it a try. Call us on 0131 661 4301 to take advantage. |
