What’s that saying again!? ‘When one door opens another one closes!’
No!?
Maybe it’s just the News then, as it seems that it’s either a stampede for an Andrex Avalanche at Asda or it’s a C-League lockout at Leipzig!

But it seems tackling the Coronavirus is not just an open and shut case.
Countries as whole or small parts are being locked down with no one allowed in or out. Stock Markets in turmoil as industries are hit, with the exception of Bog Roll Business, which is booming thanks to the moronic selfishness of people who clearly don’t give two sheets that their need to stockpile a Car full of Cushelle might mean that someone who actually needs Toilet Paper can’t get any!
Then we have major sporting events around the world being played, or planned to be played, behind closed doors! One of them being the recent Stenhousemuir v Queens Park.... a spokesperson for the home Team said that they only realised it was a behind closed doors match when they discovered they hadn’t sold the 4 Pies they’d brought in in preparation for the match. The stay-away supporters concluded that the Teams obviously decided not to turn up either following an uninspiring 0-0 Draw! One life long fan commented that if their Goalkeeper has contracted Coronavirus it’ll be the first thing he’s caught in a while! |

One thing that can be contagious is winning! And last week`s Honda Champion, Sungjae IM almost made it back to back victories when he finished -2 Under Par at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Ultimately it was only good enough for 3rd place but he was in the IC right up to the final few holes. Those winning chills, however, went to England’s Tyrrell Hatton who claimed his first PGA Tour Title and is now inducted into the Paul Azinger ‘Hall Of Existence’. |
The scoring and playing conditions at Bay Hill were much more reminiscent of a US Open. It made for a nice change seeing the Players tested in all areas of their game. Accuracy off the Tee became an advantage, laying too far back however made hitting & holding the greens a challenge, the subsequent Greenside fringes made control tricky, and the hard crispy greens put line & speed under the microscope!
From a spectators point of view, it was great as it meant any player could drop any amount of strokes at any given time! So until Tyrrell’s last drive found the fairway, his last iron found the green, and his penultimate putt was lagged to a tap in, then the result was up for grabs. |

But for me, that still wasn’t the most exciting finish to a golf event last weekend.
In Qatar, we almost were able to add another Scottish name to the Qatar Masters Trophy. David Drysdale, from nearby Dunbar, playing in his 498th European Tour start without a win, clawed his way into a Playoff with Spaniard, Jorge Campillo. What unfolded in the Playoff was just an incredible spectacle. Considering that there was only 1 previous Tour win between the two journeyman golfers and neither had exactly shot ‘lights out’ in the Final round, the standard of golf on show in the Playoff was incredible.
As is the norm the 2 players returned to the 18th Tee to start the Sudden Death Playoff. Drysdale had ‘won the toss’ and Tee`d off first – In all these players had to play that same Playoff FIVE TIMES, and 5 times out of 5 Drysdale split the fairway – 4 of which you could`ve thrown a sheet of Toilet roll over......if you could get your hands any! Campillo on the other hand, like his play during that final round, was a little more ‘military’ (left/right/left/right/left) but never in too much danger. The difference was Drysdale had the better opportunities to hit his second approach shots closer....which he did. Almost getting better with every single one. But that old adage played out – ‘you drive for show and you putt for dough!’ because every time you thought Drysdale would have a Putt for the win, Campillo would roll in his Birdie Putt first thus switching the pressure and significance thoroughly back on David`s shoulders. Which he seemed to take in his stride. But at the 5th time of asking the shoe was on the other foot with Campillo nailing his Birdie putt for the win.
I think the whole golfing fraternity, and certainly all of Scotland, were rooting for Drysdale but he can be extremely proud (and take a lot of confidence) from his display under that amount of pressure. It wouldn`t surprise me if he wasn`t back in a similar situation very soon.....and hopefully, that experience will help him finally get over the Winners line.

Improving Your Game - Wedge Fitting |
One thing that did jump out at me from the last week's golf was there was quite a significant shift in some players equipment. The most notable and noticeable was that of Justin Rose. His contract is with Honma, but it obviously has terms that allow Justin to be flexible with what equipment he actually uses – but it was particularly surprising to see that in his Honma Tour bag there wasn`t 1 Honma Club! Instead, there was a mixture of TaylorMade Woods & Irons. His wedges were the new Titleist Vokey SM8. Those new wedges also popped up in Tommy Fleetwood`s bag and it was really interesting to see they also appeared in the Tournament Winners Bag too – Tyrrell Hatton had 11 PING Clubs in his PING Bag, a TaylorMade 3-Wood and 2 Titleist Vokey SM8 Wedges. Wedges are probably the most important, and often overlooked part, of your Set Make Up. 2 common issues I see with regards to Wedges in Club Golfers bags is;
1: They aren`t ‘Gapped’ properly meaning when you really need to be accurate with distance control they don`t have Clubs that go set & sensible distances from one another.
And
2: They haven`t been chosen to suit that Players delivery style (whether that be for their pitching, chipping & bunker style or the type of terrain they play on)
Wedge Fitting is another significant Service that we provide here for you at Duddingston, and now that the ground/playing conditions are getting better, and that we have a fully comprehensive range of the Trial Wedges from all the leading Brands (Titleist Vokey, TaylorMade Milled Grind, Callaway JAWS, PING Glide 3.0, Cleveland RTX 4 and Wilson Staff Forged) we can ensure that you get the best out of your ‘Scoring Zone` with a Fitting Process you just can`t get at any walking High Street store or Internet Site.

Here`s a brief outline of how we do it:
In Studio: • Evaluate the distances of your PW and current Wedge Make Up • Analyse your delivered Lie Angle (How your Club strikes the ground) • Record your delivered Angle of Attack (How your swing attacks the ground) • Recommend and explore correct Loft options to create usable Yardage Gaps from PW to your most lofted SW
Once the Lofts are established we move outdoors to the Pitching Area.
Using the recommended Lofts we then trial all the Makes/Models in those Lofts in various ‘Shortgame Situations’ to next establish: • Best Bounce for Turf & Sand interaction • Best Grind for Shot style & variety • Best Finish for look and confidence.
All of the above is done with top-level ‘Performance Golf Balls’ (Not Range Balls) and is FREE if you do decide to purchase new Wedges – (Please Note – There is no obligation to buy if unsure or it is discovered that your current Equipment is still the best option, however, the Fitting Session Rate will be charged to cover the cost of the Fitting) |
Just this past week I have delivered 2 very useful Wedge Fitting Sessions. At both the style of Bounce & Grind was a significant part of the decision process, and only by playing the Shots from the real-time situation was the Player able to experience the influence the different Sole Styles had on the consistency and quality of those shots. In one instance the Player very quickly was able to see the ‘Three Bears’ Effect that Bounce Angle can play in the execution of Shots. Not enough bounce he struggled with too deep a divot, too much bounce he struggled with too thin/clean a contact, but when the Bounce was just right the contact was crisp and consistent. That gave him much more confidence.

What do we want? Straighter shots. When do we want it? Now! Starting the ball on the right line is key and, by watching the video below, you'll learn one of the simplest ways to do exactly that. |
‘One of the important things about good golf is consistency and repetition’ We all know that’s easier said than done so when there's a way of creating consistency, it makes sense to take advantage. That is the point of Golf Pride’s ALIGN grips, which feature a raised ridge on the back (the red strip) to ensure repetitive hand placement, helping to keep the face square throughout the swing. Even better still, you can get a FREE ALIGN grip by coming to see us for a grip fitting! Click the link for more information.
